Mary Catherine Niles, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, September 28, 2025, in Mishawaka, IN, surrounded by family and friends after facing health complications. Mary was born on March 14, 1945, in Rutland, VT, to Edward and Virginia (Gray) Carvey. She grew up in Fair Haven, VT, where she attended school. On March 11, 1967, she married the love of her life, Delos "Don" Niles Sr., and together they moved to Indiana in 1974 to build a life full of love, family, and community. For over 25 years, Mary dedicated herself to caring for children in the area-many of whom she loved as if they were her own grandchildren. Mary's favorite babysitting stories were from her early years, which she shared with great fondness. She also had a passion for camping and was part of a camping club that explored campgrounds all around Indiana with Don by her side. Mary gave back to her community in countless ways. For years, she volunteered with the Koontz Lake Association, helping out with BINGO nights and annual Easter Egg hunts. More recently, she turned her attention to the Walkerton Food Pantry and the Grovertown Community Clubhouse. One of her greatest joys was traveling back to Vermont to visit family each year. She also cherished trips to New Mexico to spend time with loved ones. Mary made it a point to attend her grandchildren's events, big or small, whenever she was asked-whether supporting them at 4-H animal shows, band concerts, or especially cheering on her granddaughter as she showed horses, often being the first one ready to head out the door. When she wasn't with family or volunteering, Mary enjoyed going to Goodwill and garage sales with her best friend of many years, Darlene Peterson. Mary and Darlene loved hitting up Goodwill and garage sales together, often coming back with big items that required some clever packing into the small car they took. Mary's life was defined by love and service. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. Mary is survived by her children: Theresa Allen of Rutland, VT; Delos "Skip" (Laura) Niles Jr. of Lake City, FL; Shawn (Ashley) Niles Sr. of Grovertown, IN; Mike Niles of Rochester, IN; Don (Lynnette) Niles Sr. of Koontz Lake, IN; and Dwight (Cris) Niles of Walkerton, IN. And one son-in-law Bill Ren of Alamogordo, NM. Her grandchildren: David and Chris Allen; Angela Niles; Debbie Baldwin; Khrystyn Hatfield; Shawn Niles Jr.; David Niles; Casandra Colvin; Amanda Kajer; Emily Wolf; Don Niles Jr.; Sarah, Andrew, and Jacob Niles; along with numerous great-grandchildren. Her siblings: Edward Carvey Jr. and Robert "Bobby" Carvey of Abilene, TX; Timothy (Denise) Carvey of Atwater, CA; Bernard (Johnna) Carvey of Poultney, VT; Rita (Tony) Ross of Poultney, VT; Monica (Clarence) Williams of Glens Falls, NY; and Sheila (Rick) Hall of Bomoseen, VT. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Delos; her son, Raymond Niles; daughter, Patti Ren; sisters Patricia Doaner, Elizabeth Hauger, and Kathleen Davis; and brother Leo "Mickey" Carvey. Visitation will be from 1:00pm-2:00pm CST on Monday, October 6, 2025 with the funeral service immediately following. Both taking place at Rannells Funeral Home – Koontz Lake Chapel. Burial to follow funeral services at Grovertown Cemetery.

My condolences to Mary's entire family. That is a beautifully written tribute to Mary. I'm happy I was able to catch up with her during her last visit to VT/ NH. I have many great memories as a kid with Mary. When she, Don & the kids lived in Proctor. We would spend days there and at Beaver Pond. The weeks & weekends of camping at Waterhouse Camp Grounds at Lake Dunmore. When she moved to IN my family went there for a 2 week vacation. She welcomed us with open arms. The more the merrier! We stayed longer than 2 weeks. We stayed until we moved to the house a mile down the road. During that time Mary treated us just like her own kids. RIP Mary. Tell my mom Hi!
