Mary Richman Peer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 3, 2025.
Mary Jane Richman Peer, age 85, of Toms Brook, VA, gained her angel wings and went home to be with the Lord on January 29, 2025.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 12, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Toms Brook, VA, where Mary was a member and held several leadership roles throughout the years.

Mary was born on November 11, 1939, on Back Road in Maurertown, VA. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Ruth Richman. She married the love of her life, Richard, on July 9, 1961, and was married for 57 years before Richard's passing on January 24, 2019.

Mary graduated from Toms Brook High School in 1958. During high school, Mary was on the girls' basketball and softball teams where she helped to lead the team in several successful championship seasons.

Following high school, Mary's call was to be a nurse. She attended Winchester Medical Hospital Nursing School and received her RN degree in 1961. After graduation, she began her nursing career at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, VA, where she was a floor nurse and later worked in ICU for many years until her retirement. Mary then provided nursing care at several area nursing homes as well as private nursing care within the community. Mary's compassion and caring heart were qualities that made Mary one of the best nurses in the Valley, known by many for the great care that she provided for her patients.

Mary loved her family, friends, and life on the farm, along with frequent visits and trips to Lancaster, PA. She especially loved her grandchildren, whom she called the 'love of her life'. Mary was an excellent cook, who would often be found in her kitchen making meals for her family and anyone in need. Many fond memories were made at their home in Toms Brook, VA, where she and Richard hosted the best family and friends' get-togethers and pool parties.

Mary is survived by her sons Greg Peer (and partner Susan Dickinson) of Woodstock, VA; Todd Peer (and wife Karen) of Toms Brook, VA; and daughter, Angie Peer Salyards (and husband John) of Delaplane, VA, where Mary lived over the past six years. She is also survived by her grandchildren, who lovingly called her 'Mamaw', Sarah Peer (Washington, D.C.); Hannah Peer (Toms Brook, VA); Jordan Salyards (and wife Caitlin) of Marshall, VA; and Hunter and Tyler Peer (Woodstock, VA).

Mary is also survived by her loving twin sister, Martha Richman Good (and husband Bill) of Woodstock, VA; beloved brother, Robert Richman (and wife Betty) of Annandale, VA; sister-in-law, Jean Richman (Maurertown, VA); and brother-in-law, Phil Slaughter (Lake Stevens, WA), along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her brothers, Floyd and Harold Richman (Maurertown, VA), and her sister, Mildred Richman Slaughter (Uniontown, PA). Mary was the Godmother to her nieces, Alesia Good Livesay (Woodstock, VA) and Amy Good Bauserman (Woodstock, VA).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 3343 S. Main Street, Toms Brook, VA, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I just saw this about Aunt Mary's passing. The tribute is nice to read about her. Truly a sweet, kind and caring Aunt! Absolutely the best cook - delicious and hopefully her recipes will continue through generations.
Nanny always said, Mary is a good girl as we mentioned her sweet nature. While her passing is sad, we know she is blessed and at peace.

Condolences and sympathy during this time to Angela, Greg and Todd as well as respective family.

Love, Mike and Sue Peer
