Mary Elizabeth Hutton Roberts, a cherished friend, member of her church family, and a beloved educator, departed this life on March 8, 2026, at the age of 80 in Groves, Texas. Born on April 16, 1945, in Alexandria, Louisiana, she dedicated her life to the noble profession of education, and service to God, leaving a profound impact on countless students and fellow church members throughout her life and career.
Having earned a B.A. from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, and a Master of Music from Illinois Wesleyan University, Mary was well-known for her beautiful piano playing and her soothing singing voice, which brought joy and encouragement to many. Music was not merely a hobby for her; it was an integral part of her life and ministry that allowed her to connect with others and express her Christian joy and creativity. She could sight-read anything and was a strong force in the music program at her church.
She had the heart of a servant, and for a number of years, she and her husband Jimmy traveled in an RV and served in Lay Renewal service at a host of Baptist churches throughout east Texas and Louisiana. She often spoke of the people she met and the valuable lessons they learned in the ministry.
In her latter years, Mary was a devoted member of Val Verde Baptist Church. Mary was known for her strong, often mischievous spirit, her highly developed sense-of-humor (and sarcasm), and her unwavering willingness to help anyone in need. She was truly a friend to many, embodying the values of compassion and kindness. Her warm-hearted nature inspired those around her, and her willingness to lend a hand made a lasting impression on her community.
Mary took great pride in her role as a mentor to several pastors and music directors, guiding them with wisdom and support throughout their journeys. These accomplishments not only mark her professional life but also reflect her dedication to uplifting others in their spiritual and musical endeavors.
She is survived by her nieces: Kathy Craig, Kelle O'Connor, Kristi Blancaflor, and Kim Williamson, who will carry on her legacy of love, kindness, and service. Mary was predeceased by her loving spouse, James Earl "Jimmy" Roberts, Sr., and her parents, Judson and Hazel Hutton.
Visitation for Mary will be held on March 12, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th Street, Groves, Texas. The funeral service will be on March 13, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM at the same location with a graveside service following at Memory Gardens in Nederland, Texas.
Mary's remarkable life, marked by her devotion to education, music, and the Lord, will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit and dedication to bringing joy to others will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
