Mary Ann Schaufler, age 88, of Washington Twp., Michigan, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 17, 2026. Born on May 20, 1937, in
Detroit, Michigan, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, her community, and the many people whose lives she touched with kindness and grace.
Mary Ann was the daughter of John and Asma (Daniel) Andary. She was deeply proud of her Lebanese heritage, a legacy that shaped her family's story and remained an important part of her identity throughout her life. Her father immigrated to the United States as a young boy after losing his mother in Beirut, and Mary Ann carried that family history with respect and gratitude. She graduated from St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe and remained grounded in the values of faith, perseverance, and family that were instilled in her from an early age.
On June 13, 1955, Mary Ann became a member of the Daughter of Isabella chapter Queen of the Skies #638, reflecting her lifelong commitment to faith and fellowship. On May 28, 1960, she married her beloved husband, William "Bill" Schaufler, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Together they built a loving home and shared a life centered on family and mutual devotion. In 1967, they moved north and settled in Romeo, where Mary Ann would remain a longtime and cherished resident.
Mary Ann was a dedicated mother and grandmother whose family meant everything to her. She was known for her steady presence, her warm heart, and her ability to make others feel cared for and welcome. She was excellent with numbers and took great pride balancing the checkbook to the very last penny. Her careful attention to detail and her sense of responsibility were matched by her deep love for the people around her.
Her faith was one of the guiding forces of her life. Mary Ann was a devoted member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, where she found strength, friendship, and purpose. She shared her love of music as a choir member of 57 years, lending her voice to the worship community she so dearly valued. She was also active in the Comfort Makers Blanket group, where she helped make blankets for veterans, offering comfort through her time and compassion.
For many years, Mary Ann was a great advocate and dedicated volunteer at the Capuchin Retreat House in Washington. She found great inspiration attending the retreats. Over time, she developed strong spiritual bonds with various priests, staff and fellow volunteers. It was a very special place for her..
Mary Ann was also a wonderful cook, and she loved expressing her care through the meals she prepared and shared. Her authentic Lebanese dishes were especially admired, and she took pride in preserving the flavors and traditions of her heritage. Since Bill was of European decent, she also mastered the art of creating meals that reflected the blending of two families and two traditions. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, generosity, and lasting memories.
She was a devoted fan of Detroit sports teams and never missed a game when one was on. She especially loved the Tigers, a passion she inherited from her father and shared with her siblings. That loyalty, enthusiasm, and sense of tradition were part of what made Mary Ann so memorable to those who knew her. She found joy in simple pleasures and in the shared experiences that brought family and community together.
Mary Ann also played an important role in the Romeo Community School District for 27 years. There, she not only nourished high school students but also became a trusted support system and someone they could talk to. Her kindness, patience, and genuine concern left a lasting impression on generations of students. Even today, many remember her for the encouragement she gave and the comfort she offered during important moments in their lives.
Mary Ann Schaufler will be remembered for her faith, her devotion to family, her generous spirit, and the many quiet ways she made life better for others. Her legacy lives on in the meals she prepared, the songs she sang, the blankets she helped create, the students she supported, and the family she loved so deeply. She will be dearly missed and forever cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
