Mary V. Sciortino,100, of Waldwick, a beloved matriarch, devoted friend, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, New Jersey, after a brief illness. Born on July 26, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Catherine and Archibald “Archie” Baxter, Mary lived a life full of love, kindness, and selflessness that touched everyone around her.
A graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in 1943, Mary embarked on a professional journey that would see her thrive as a Legal Secretary in the Empire State Building, and later as a Bank Teller for Hudson City Bank in Waldwick, New Jersey. Her dedication and strong work ethic were merely reflective of her character—always putting the needs of others above her own.
Mary’s true pride, however, lay in her family, whom she raised with immense love and care. She is survived by her loving children: John "Jack," Jeanne Baum (Len), and Tony (Ellen). She was a cherished mother-in-law to Jill and an adored sister to Gerard "Jerry" Baxter. Her legacy extends through her nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her spirit and the values she instilled in them.
At her core, Mary was a vibrant individual whose passions brought joy not only to her own life but to those around her. She loved to dance, finding joy in every step and every rhythm. An avid reader, she relished the adventures found within the pages of books. Her gardening reflected her nurturing soul, as she lovingly tended to her plants with the same care she offered her family. Additionally, the beach held a special place in her heart—an oasis where she found serenity and happiness.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Anthony “Andy,” and one son, Thomas, who she loved deeply. She also mourned the loss of her siblings, Patricia Parise and Thomas Gauhgran, with whom she shared countless memories. Together they enriched her life, and she cherished every moment spent in their company.
As we remember Mary, let us honor her proudest accomplishments—her unwavering commitment to family and her passion for giving to others. She left behind a legacy of love, compassion, and the importance of selflessness, lessons that will be carried on by all who had the privilege of knowing her. In the hearts of her family and friends, Mary Sciortino will live on as a symbol of love that transcends time and space, forever remembered and dearly missed.
A Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday, November 6th, 11:00am at Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect St, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Final disposition will be private
