Mary Marjorie Cardwell Sheffield, born July 10, 1930, at home in Valera, Texas to Auburn C. (Slim) Cardwell and Myrtle Ethyl Day Cardwell and entered heaven Saturday, June 22, 2024, from Redstone Park in
Brownwood, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Curtis, husband David, grandson Jeffrey Rice, parents Auburn (Slim) Cardwell and Ethyl, brother Junior Cardwell and Jane and sisters Dorothy Woods and Roy, Alta Schuder and Preston, and Betty Burmeister and Burt. Also, father in law James and Lizzie, sisters in law Lela Sheffield Thompson and Bill (Red), Clara Sheffield Connaly and Paul, Rena (Tina) Sheffield and Mae, Clyde (Sug) Sheffield and Avis, and Irvin (Tuff) Sheffield.
Margie, Granny, Granny-Granny or Aunt Margie as she was called by her family and friends, was a proud housewife her entire adult life and kept an immaculate house. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was also a strict disciplinarian who showed those in her charge what tough love meant. We were all better people for it as we learned boundaries, limits, plus rewards of good behavior. She loved her family and treated everyone she met as she would like to be treated no matter their attitude.
In school at
Millersview, Tx, she was an out standing athlete with many all-tournament medals and a full scholarship offer from Texas Women's University (NTSU) and was valedictorian of her senior class.
She was introduced to David Sheffield by his sister -in-law Lucille Herriage Sheffield who convinced her to go to the Sheffield family reunion on the 4th of July, on the Concho River. She was instrumental in restarting this tradition on our family farm following the death of her youngest son, Steven Curtis at age 18 months in March of 1961. These have been held every year except 1 from 1961 and continue each Easter Sunday except the first on held spontaneously in 1961. The loss of her son had a great impact on her but only strengthened her faith as she saw the angel enter the hospital room and take his spirit as he expired. Always a creative and outdoors woman, God used these traits and led her to clear and build a park on our land where the Easter celebrations were held. She enjoyed hunting and once killed 2 deer with one bullet as they lined up perfectly. She would shoot them and then Dad would get the wagon and bring them to the house, then they would process them together. She taught Sunday school and led the singing at Grosvenor Baptist Church while her children were growing up and in later years when living in Brownwood, after her husband passed, she attended Haven of Hope church. She especially loved the sermons and music of Brother Bryan Hall. She loved attending the annual barbeque at Millersview on November 11th which began when all of the Millersview who served in World War 1 returned home alive, although most had been wounded, each year and always helped with the serving until no longer physically able to do so.
She is survived by her children, Shirlie Sheffield Rust and John, Joann Sheffield Marshall and Richard and son Phillip Sheffield and Janice. Grandchildren; Michael Rust and Karen, Jennifer Rust Jennings and Jason, Cassandra Marshall Mason and Jarrad, Quentin Marshall and Bobby Jo, Misty Sheffield and Maxie, David Sheffield Jr. and Amanda, James Sheffield, Joshua Sheffield and Crystal, Joshua Rice, Jonathan Sheffield, 26 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
