Mary was born on October 31, 1928, to Jesse and Annie (West) Smith. She grew up in a coal-mining family in a small town in West Virginia. In 1948, Mary was the first West Virginia girl to be accepted as a flight nurse in the United States Air Force retired as a Lt. Colonel at Cannon Air Force Base in 1974. Mary and her husband settled down in Farwell, TX and they were long time residence. Before becoming a wife, Miss Smith was better known as "Smitty", and served as a second lieutenant in Bluefield West Virginia. Miss Smith was in charge of the surgical clinic there at Grace Hospital before joining the health department and worked both jobs for six months each. She had a tough personality, but she was full of love. On December 12, 1954, she married John Carlson in Virginia City, NV. Mary and John always traveled with their dog, Chew. She was amazing at baking pies, and she loved to garden and tend to her apple and peach trees. Mary hosted many gatherings such as family reunions and social gatherings. She was a War Hero who helped save lives during her time as a flight nurse, she never missed a day of work during her career in the Military. Mary was a hard worker and gave this world the best 94 years of her life, especially her loved ones. She loved to feed the deer, birds, and turkeys, and was good at fishing. No matter what Mary went through, she always thought about others rather than herself. She was very unselfish. Mary was a beautiful woman to this world who will be missed dearly.
