Mary A. Stangel, 93, a resident of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away in December 2024 at Community Hospice Care in Fernandina Beach, FL. She was born on June 2, 1931 in Oak Park, IL to Mary Alice and Henry Schwagerman. Mary was a resident of Fernandina Beach, FL for the past 30 years, prior to that she lived in Libertyville, IL and Lindenhurst, IL. She held both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree; and taught in the Lake Villa School District for over 30 years. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach, and involve in many parish activities, clubs and committees. Her interests and hobbies were varied. She enjoyed playing Mahjong, participated in an investment club, a Newcomers Club, water aerobics, and the Gourmet Gals, a monthly luncheon and cooking group of friends. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining family and friends. She was also very artistic and worked with stained glass and beaded jewelry. She water skied, snow skied, sailed, and traveled with her late husband.
Mary is survived by her children, Cheryl (Jerry) Rejc, Greg Stangel, Ross (Kathy) Stangel, and Suzanne (Glenn) Longshore; her grandchildren, Alex Longshore, Christian (Madison) Longshore, Joseph (Samantha) Rejc, Matthew (Sarah) Rejc, Sarah (Mikey) Hooks, and Laura (Robert) Wheeler; her six great grandchildren,; and her siblings, Kay Hickey, and Bill (Donna) Schwagerman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph J. Stangel; her sister, Carol Schwagerman; and her parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 10am. Interment will be held at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach, FL.
