Mary Elizabeth (Wells) Stepney, age 100, of Mansfield, PA, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at UPMC Williamsport Hospital. She was born on December 23, 1924, in Portslate, Sussex, England. Mary served in the Women's Land Army from 1942 to 1947 and was on the British Naval Base in Mombasa, Kenya from 1948 to 1949. She arrived in American in 1957 and bought her first farm in Susquehanna County. In 1973, Mary sold the farm and bought Rutland Hill Farm where she raised sheep until her retirement at age 95. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1998. On her 100th birthday, she received a Mansfield Mayoral Proclamation, a County Proclamation from the Tioga County Commissioners, and a State Representative Citation sponsored by Clint Owlett. Mary also received a birthday card from King Charles III of Great Britain and his Queen consort, Camilla Windsor. Her son Simon came to live with and care for her during her last year of life.
Mary is survived by her sons, Oscar John Stepney of Cameroon, Africa and Simon Stepney of Spain; four grandchildren, Oliver Stepney, Alex Stepney, Rachel Stepney, and Erika Stepney; four great grandchildren, Marcel, Eric, Alexia, and Edrielle; nieces, Clarie Jenkinson, Liz Webster, Rosie Wells; and nephew, Roddy Bird. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Michael Vernon Wells; and a sister, Margaret Alice Bird.
Neighbors, friends and family are invited to a celebration of life from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 315 Rutland Hill Rd., Mansfield, PA. Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 637 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA is assisting the family. www.buckheitfcandcrematory.com
