Mary Stiegel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Williams Dingmann Funeral Homes - St. Cloud on Feb. 16, 2022.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 19 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Mary Lou Stiegel, 88, who passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022 at St. Benedict's Center. Rev. Thomas Olson will officiate and burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 6PM-8PM on Friday, February 18 at Williams Dingmann Funeral Home in St. Cloud and an hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Mary Lou was born on December 3, 1933 in Callaway, MN to Joseph and Bernadine (Flottemesch) Steffl. She married John F. Stiegel on August 27, 1956 in Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway. The couple lived in Brooklyn Center where she started her nursing career, until moving to St. Cloud in 1964. She obtained her nursing training at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls, which was affiliated with St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. She worked as an RN in the St. Cloud Hospital for 30 years until retiring only to continue nursing at St. Benedict's Sr. Community and the Waite Park Nursing Home. Mary Lou had a caring and compassionate heart.
She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where she was very active and volunteered her time selflessly baking caramel rolls for bake sales and the annual Christmas bazaar, helped clean the church, distributed communion to the homebound, and headed the funeral dinners at the church for years. She was also involved with the Brownies and Cub Scouts, as a den leader, when her children were members. She volunteered at Meals on Wheels, Catholic Charities, and at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration receiving an award for having volunteered over 1000 hours. When she wasn't serving others, she enjoyed being with her family. She loved baking and playing cards and board games with her children and grandchildren. She played with friends for many years in a bridge club, loved to travel, garden, play croquet with family in the backyard, laugh, and share her beautiful smile with others. She had an optimistic attitude and practiced her faith in word and deed.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband John, children; Mark Joseph (Mary) of St. Cloud, Jonelle Betz of St. Cloud, Jacqueline (Norman) Campbell of Calgary, Alberta Canada, Paul F. (Laura) of St. Cloud, Jean (Kevin) Harthan of Sartell, Andrew (Kirsten) of Sauk Rapids, James (Karen) of Maricopa, AZ, and daughter in-law Heidi Stiegel of Sauk Rapids, sister Beatty Mathershead of Redondo Beach, CA, 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Steven J. Stiegel in 2014, siblings; Marcella, Delores, Flavian, Leo, Bernadine and Joseph Jr.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Benedict's Senior Community for their loving care and compassion of Mary Lou.

I remember Mary Lou for having the sweetest smile. Behind that smile was incredible strength. I would love to know how she managed to do all the things she did. A force of nature.
