Mary Anne Tormoen, age 87, of Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully to her eternal home on November 5, 2025.
She was born March 21, 1938, in Mauston, Wisconsin, to William Brown and Edith DeLong and was baptized into God's family at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Mary graduated from Madonna High School in 1956, and moved to Milwaukee to work at AC Spark Plug and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and then moved to Janesville where she worked in a restaurant and later at Young's Truck Stop in Mauston. Her high school sweetheart George Tormoen was drafted into the US Army in 1958. Before he departed for Korea, they married in Fort Knox, Kentucky, on July 11th that same year, and to this union Theresa, Kimberly and Scott were born. George & Mary were happily married for 66 years.
Upon George's return from Korea they settled in Camp Douglas. Mary, devoted wife and mother, was a lovely homemaker who also took in ironing, did babysitting, cleaned for the Catholic Church, and worked at Singleton's Grocery Store for many years. She was forever cooking and baking and was known for her delicious soups, pies, cookies, jellies, jams, homemade buns and lefse! She kept an immaculate house. Gifted with hospitality, her door was always open to stranger and visitor alike. She was an avid reader and over the years, it is estimated that she enjoyed 1,000's of games of Scrabble! She also had a great love for country and classical music.
Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church and served on St. Anne's Altar Society. She was gifted at sewing and her hard-working hands created many items. A favorite memory - the children receiving new flannel pajamas for Christmas and homemade Barbie Doll clothes. She reupholstered furniture and even refinished an upright piano with her Uncle Ralph! Mary thoroughly enjoyed dancing, playing cards with family and friends, and getting her daily walk in. Annual family camping trips to Burrows Lake in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, were a highlight every summer for over 30 years.
Mary and her husband George began wintering in Arizona in 1991, and built their own vacation home. While there, they enjoyed several years of square and round dancing. A treasured memory is the love and beauty that was evident when the two were on the dance floor together. They also thoroughly enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers. And Grandma Mary was always "all in" to have some fun from roller coasters to parasailing!
Left to celebrate her life is her beloved children: Theresa (Scott) Sutherland, Danielsville, GA, Kimberly (Scott) Glenna of Shafer, MN, and Scott (Kristy) Tormoen of Wilton, WI. She will be missed by her grandchildren: Jake, Luke (Ashley), Derek (Emily), Matthew (Jordan), Elizabeth, Seth (Katiya) and Kody and her great-grandchildren: Gavin, Travis, Aubree, Gannon, Benjamin, Stella, Levi, Gabriel, Kashis and Ellery.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, parents William & Edith Brown, sisters Patricia Rowe and Barb Sirois, brother Mike Brown and her granddaughter Kesha Tormoen.
The family would like to thank Tomah Health Palliative & Hospice Care teams for their great care, kindness, and support. Special thanks to family & friends for seeing us through Mom's journey with dementia and cancer.
