Mary York Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Wherry York passed away on October 31, 2025, in Aurora, Colorado, at the age of 98. Born on June 10, 1927, in Beatrice, Nebraska, she was the eldest of seven children of Tom E. and Betty Barr Wherry. She grew up in Tecumseh, Nebraska, graduating from Tecumseh High School in 1945.

Mary's lifelong devotion to music began early, singing soprano in school and church choirs. She pursued music education at Tarkio College and later the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, earning her bachelor's degree in 1949 and a Master of Music in 1957. Her career in vocal music education spanned more than four decades, beginning at Wilber High School and continuing in Gothenburg and the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller school system. Her choirs regularly earned Superior ratings, a testament to her dedication and talent.

In 1964, Mary married Tom York in Tecumseh. They welcomed their son Jim in 1968 and built a life centered around teaching, music, and travel. Mary also maintained a private vocal studio for many years and taught part-time at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Stone School.

Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life. A devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School, led youth groups, directed choirs, and served as moderator of Presbyterian Women. She was also a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for over 75 years.

Mary and Tom shared a love of travel that took them across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. She brought joy to many through her music, hospitality, and unwavering spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Nancy and Ann; and brother Tom. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Tom; son Jim and his wife Beth; grandchildren Hannah, Nathaniel, and Benjamin; siblings Art (Edie), John (Bernice), Jane Koll; extended family; and countless former students.

Her legacy lives on through generations of vocal music students she influenced.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15th, at First United Presbyterian Church in Kearney, Nebraska.

We were sisters, in the class of 1969 and 1967, at Gothenburg High. We both picture our wonderful instructor, directing a Heavenly chorus in her green satin gown !

Miss Wherry (Mrs York) was such a wonderful influence for the class of `67. We had so much fun doing "South Pacific" and "The sound of music". Such ambitious productions! I got to play a little piano for the boys small group. Because of her I got to sing w/Mens Glee and mixed Chorus at the University. At play practice I got to become friends with my true love and class mate Shari. So many wonderful memories for both of us. What a wonderful and accomplished lady. We are both sure she is in the presence of our Lord in Heaven. Steve and Shari Hinze

I am so sorry to hear of mary's passing. She was a wonderful lady and a great role model for all of us that came after her. She was always interested in everyone and I had her for a public school music class and she tried her darndest to get me to keep the pitch, but I don't think she was very successful. Anyway I am sending love to all the family and know that I am thinking of you.

We send our deepest sympathy in your loss of Mary. She was a delightful woman who I was privileged to call my friend. She was a member of the UNK Women's Club Afternoon Book Club for many years and we shared lots of great books together. Always gracious and warm, Mary was indeed a treasure who will be remembered fondly by so many. Our condolences to you all. Marlene and Tommy Hansen

Mary was my music teacher in 1961 when I was in the 8th grade. I still listen to music today. I was quite fond of music then. She excelled in teaching music.

So very sorry for your loss. What an incredible teacher Mrs. York was. Our choir groups at SEM always walked away with superior ratings. She led us with grace and a reassuring smile that instilled in us the ability to produce beautiful music. I´m thinking she sings now in the most glorious choir of all. God´s peace be with you all.

The first time I ever had Madelines was when Mary made them for the teachers at Eddyville when her and Tom returned from France.
