Matias Salas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Dec. 2, 2025.
On November 25, 2025, our hearts were broken as we said goodbye to Matias Salas Jr. (Sal), who passed peacefully at Alaris Nursing Home. Though our world feels quieter now, the echo of his laughter and the love he poured into his family will stay with us forever.
Born on June 26, 1957, at Martland Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Sal was the cherished son of Evarlista Salas and his beloved late father, Matias Salas Sr. From the very beginning, he carried a strong spirit, a playful sense of humor, and a heart made for family.
Sal spent his life loving one woman-his wife, Delma Salas, his partner for 55 years. Their bond was one built on devotion, youthfulness, and a love that endured every season of life. Delma stood by his side as both wife and caregiver, faithfully and tenderly caring for him until his final day. Their story is one of deep commitment, and the strength between them will always be remembered.
He was a proud father to three children who each brought light to his life. His eldest, Enid "Toby" Salas, blessed him with four grandchildren-Destiny, Dominique, Davina, and Desiree -and one great-grandchild, little Saveah Velasquez, who brought joy to his later years. His son Matias Salas III gave him more reasons to smile through his grandchildren Meya, Matthias, and Isabelle. His youngest, Marco Maldonado, added another special branch to the family tree with his child, A'shadieeyah Maldonado.
Sal was surrounded by a loving circle of siblings who shaped his life with closeness and memories: his sister Ibis "Bubi", brothers Eddie, Rigo, Alex and Dario; and he now reunites in heaven with his beloved late sister, Sol Maria.
He was also embraced by a large and devoted extended family. His in-laws-Brenda Salas, Carmen Salas, Alesia Salas, Diva Salas, Diana Velez, Julio Maldonado, Anna Maldonado-always held a special place in his heart. His many nieces and nephews filled his life with joy, each one remembered with love: Jacob (Rocky), Luis, Laron, (Lil) Eddie, (Lil) Rigo, William, Krystal, Natasha, Natalia, Felix, Americo, Dario, Melanie, the beloved Gregory, Idania, the beloved Louie, Evita, Luz, Giana, Jesus, Julio, Bianca, Javier, and Gabriella. And a host of cousins, relatives and friends too many to name.
To all of us, Sal was a beloved husband, grandfather, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Anyone who crossed his path knew the brightness he brought. He wore his "comedian hat" proudly and effortlessly-always ready with a joke, a smile, or a story that could turn a heavy day into a lighter one. His humor was a gift he shared freely.
Sal had a heart for people. If someone needed a place to stay, he opened his home without hesitation. If kids needed guidance, encouragement, or simply someone to cheer them on, he was there-whether on the ballfield, on long family days at the beach, or teaching them lessons they'd carry forever.
His grandchildren were the joy of his world. Whether they were watching documentaries together or listening to him share the Word, those moments became treasures-little seeds he planted that will continue to grow in each of them.
Sal worked with dedication at the United States Postal Service, where he eventually retired in 2001. Not one to sit still, he later became the head custodian at Hillside Elementary School in Montclair, NJ, where his kindness and work ethic touched many lives.
In his quiet moments, he loved simple joys: playing cards, board games, keeping up with sports, and treating himself to his favorite candy-PayDays-a sweet indulgence that made him smile every time.
Sal lived a full life, rooted in love, laughter, and faith. Though we feel the ache of his absence, we celebrate the beautiful years he gave us and the legacy he leaves behind-one of humor, generosity, loyalty, and unshakeable family love.
He will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered.
