Matilda Reed Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 6, 2026.
Matilda "Toby" Reed passed away on February 24 2026, rejoining her beloved husband, William E. Reed. Born in Philadelphia in 1931, Toby lived a long life defined by independence, curiosity, and a joyful, quick-witted spirit.

Outspoken and opinionated in the best way, Toby was known for her sharp mind, warm heart, and witty sense of humor. She had a multifaceted career as a US Marines Inventory Resources Manager, a Librarian's assistant and a Human Resources Manager for St. Lucie County, Florida. In retirement Toby immersed herself in one of her great passions: community theatre. As both an actor and director, she loved bringing stories to life on stage and sharing her creative vision with fellow performers. Toby's performances earned local awards, and theater critics described her work as "polished" and "delightful."

Toby wholeheartedly devoted herself to the things that brought her the most joy: reading voraciously–especially crime novels but truly any book she could get her hands on–, writing poetry, enjoying good food, watching figure skating, playing MahJong with her friends, and supporting animal rescue organizations. She was a fierce and enthusiastic competitor when it came to games, delighting in spirited rounds of Scrabble, Mexican Train dominoes, and Rummikub with her loved ones.

Toby's curiosity, her thoughtfulness, and her intelligence never faded. Well into her 90s she embraced new technology, learning to use social media and connecting with friends near and far through online Scrabble and other games. Her mind remained sharp and engaged until the final months of her life. Toby will be remembered by those who loved her for her animated, delightfully candid spirit and for the joy she brought simply by being herself.

Toby leaves behind her daughter, Fern (Chuck) Dillman; her son, Bruce (Cheryl) Reed; and her beloved granddaughters, Shannon (Preston) Gribben-Reed and Caitlin (Nick) Seefeldt. She also leaves two great-grandsons, Reid and Ryan Seefeldt, who brought her enormous pride and joy.

Toby will be interred beside her beloved William at Arlington National Cemetery. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. At her request, there will be no formal services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Toby's honor to Delaware Hospice at https://delawarehospice.org/give/.

Though her final curtain has fallen, the joy, wit, laughter, and warmth Toby shared with others will long be remembered.
