Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 1969.
Matt Wilcher Jr., January 22, 1927- 1969, was born in Hustonville, Kentucky to Matt Green Wilcher and Elizabeth (Smith) Wilcher. The family moved to Acton, Indiana in the 30's where Matt Jr. spent most of the rest of his life. In 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served during WW II and until 1946. After his military service discharge, Matt went to work for the Beech Grove Fire Department. In 1960, he opened his own appliance store in Wanamaker, Indiana. Matt expanded the appliance business into three additional stores in the next nine years. "Junior" (Matt) loved sports with his favorites being fishing and stock car racing. He ran a few good runs on 16th Street back in the day. Matt was one of seven children of Matt (Sr) and "Lizzy". His sibling are: Gerald, Cleo, Vernon, Larry, Anna Lee Hoyt, and Violet Mattingly. Matt has three children; Richard Wilcher of Stanford, Kentucky (deceased), Michael (Debbie) Wilcher, and LeAnn (Bill) Wilcher LaFollett both of Indianapolis. Matt has 10 grandchildren- Richard L. Wilcher, Jr. Ralph David Short, Joseph A. Short, Bonnie S. Wilcher-Guzman, Kellie D. Wilcher-Fannin, Tracey L. Short-Rindahl, Julie Wilcher Davis, Jeff Wilcher, Derek LaFollett, and Adrienne LaFollett. Matt Wilcher Jr., was a great family man, with an outgoing personality, and zest for life. He and his big smile are very much missed by his children and siblings and always will be. A memorial service honoring, remembering, and offering everlasting peaceful rest for this gentleman will be held Sunday, September 10th, 2:00 p.m. beginning with a gathering of friends and family at Acton Baptist Church (11039 Exchange Street) and ending at the gravesite of Matt and Lizzie Wilcher where Matt's new memorial stone is now set. Pastor Clyde McCammack will lead at the gravesite.
