Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hernando Funeral Home on Apr. 8, 2025.
With profound love and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the legacy of Matthew "Scott" Burdett, who went home to be with the Lord on February 22, 2025. A devoted soldier, husband, father, and friend, Scotts life was a testament to selfless service, unwavering joy, and a reminder to "never miss a moment".An Army Brat born in Fayetteville, NC on December 17, 1974, Scott moved around most of his youth until finally calling the Memphis, TN area home where he graduated from Munford High School in 1993. With a desire to see the world, Scott joined the Air Force after high school, completing his basic training at Randolph Air Base, San Antonio, TX. After serving his first duty assignment in Del Rio, TX he decided he would switch branches and join the Army, for fear of never leaving Texas. He served as a Combat Medic in the Army before completing Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA in 2008 where he would be commissioned as a 2LT in the Army Transportation Corp. He bravely served our Nation for 22 years including serving in combat after September 11, 2001.Scotts service to others did not end with his military service. On March 6, 2018, he would stop to assist with a car accident he witnessed on his way home from work. This night would profoundly change his life when he was struck by a distracted driver resulting in a catastrophic traumatic brain injury. For seven years he gave it his all, but his body ultimately could handle no more. For those who had the pleasure of knowing him, he will always be remembered for his love of life. Scotts daughters were the most important gifts ever given to him. He never missed a field trip, Girl Scout activity, school event, dance recital, or moments he could create that they would remember. He was an active member of his church and loved teaching Awana. He loved roller coasters, Garth Brooks songs, running, and his beloved Tennessee VolunteersScott is survived by his beloved wife Jessica Fowler Burdett; his children, Pennilopi Ann and Amelia Mae of
Hernando, MS; his father Matthew Robert (Kristie) of LaPine, OR; his mother Retired MAJ Jeanette Kay Ham of Port St. John, FL; his step-father Retired COL Wilton Ham (Patricia) of Gainesville, VA; his step-mother Judy Daniels (Galen) of Millville, UT; his sister Audrey Yager (Ryan) and their children Marceline Coker and Samuel Yager of Colonial Beach, VA; his brother Devin Ham of Las Vegas, NV; his sister Mandy (Justin) Cleverly of Buhl, ID and their children Zyon, Nyah, and Aysha; his sister Valerie (Tyrone) Konecny of Pleasant View, UT and her children Taylor, Samantha, and Colby; and his brother Joshua Whitney of Moses Lake, WA.
