Matthew Cage Obituary

Published by King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. - Austin on Oct. 8, 2010.
Deacon Matthew Cage was born July 5, 1946 in Taylor, Texas to the late Robert and Emma Cage. On Friday, October 8, 2010, God called Matthew home. Matthew was a graduate of Miller High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. On October 10, 1969, he married Clara Hunter. To this union three daughters were born. He worked at Harris Publishing Company for over 30 years. Matthew accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas under the leadership of Rev. O. L. Terrell. After moving to Austin, Texas, Matthew joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He later joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. J. Dixon. Matthew was a diligent servant of God who served in many capacities at Pleasant Grove including Chairman and Co-chairman of the Deacon Board, Church Trustee, President of the Male Chorus, a member of the Sanctuary Choir and Brotherhood. Matthew also served as a link for the elderly and sik/shut-in. Matthew later joined the NewLight Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, member of the Male Chorus and Sanctuary Choir. Matthew recently moved back to Corpus Christi to help take care of his mother where he joined St. Matthews Baptist Church under watch-care. Matthew loved serving God through his singing. He had a unique tenor voice like no other. Even after moving back to Corpus Christi, he often traveled back to NewLight to sing with the Male Chorus. Matthew left a living example of faithful Christian and loving servant. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Matthew was preceded in death by his parents, three brother Rudolph, Johnie (Joe) and Jim, and one sister Ernestine Powell. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Clara Cage; three daughers, Monique Cage, Tonya Richardson (Marco), NaTasha Dogins (Marcus); two god-daughters, Ondreau Taylor (George) and Sharon Hill-Smith (Kenny); God-given mother, Verse age Taylor; three brothers, Robet Sr. (Lois) and Ray (Rachel) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Rev. Frank, Sr. (Ethel) of Austin, Texas; three sisters, Lola Boson, Alene (Arthur) Lott and Louise Cage, all of Corpus Christi, Texas; ten grandchildren, Alexis Fisher, Kiara Sowell, Ledazhon Cage, MeMarco, Marcus, Malik, Markial and Micah Richardson, Toney Dogins and Marcus Dogins, Jr.; six god-grandchildren, Italy and Jaylon Taylor, Stephanie, David and Erik Nivens, Kendra Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
