On December 19th, 2025, Matthew Ryan Compton (35), of Statesville, North Carolina, completed suicide after succumbing to his secluded mental health battles.

Although it is impossible to know what kind of turmoil Matt was fighting- it is blatantly clear that as painful and devastating as this loss is, his memory will forever resonate with all fortunate enough to have known him. Matt, FC1, Happy Haunter, Haunter of Astora- will be forever cherished by the multitude of friends, family, and shipmates/servicemembers currently grieving the shocking loss of such an authentic soul. He lived a vibrant life with unmatched genuine character and tenacity for his hobbies/interests such as weapons systems, firearms, history, golf, the Cubs, Panthers (while winning), video games- and an unmatched connection with the unwavering loving communities he immersed himself in. There aren't accurate words to depict how much Matt will be missed when his presence, humor, banter, and sincerity truly affected so many in such a unique and irreplaceable way. His common catch phrases of telling golf balls to, "sit down!", "That goes in!", or "Doubters looooose", and "AW COME ON MAN!" are just a few examples of the countless goofy exclamations and pure joy/happiness he brought to our lives and smiles permanently held within our hearts.

Matt's unmatched level of knowledge, pride, and charisma was best demonstrated while serving our country in the United States Navy as a Fire Controlman for six years onboard USS Stout DDG 55. His legacy lives on with how we each individually loved, adored, valued, and remember Matt. The remarkable time spent together. Hours in combat/CIWS Mount 21 and countless underways/sea stories shared. His indistinguishable laughter is permanently embedded in our recollections. Most importantly- the family and friendships built with warm and precious memories that will never fade. Matt was the sunshine to a lot of our lives, and will be deeply missed beyond belief. He is survived by his father, Michael Compton; mother, Jonette Moore; brother, Christopher Compton; and his son, Chandler Compton.

Military honors/services will be held on January 22nd, at 10:00 am, at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.

Family requests that memorial contributions be made towards the following programs/resources Matt loved and supported: K9's for Warriors, Military/Veterans Crisis Line, and USO (United Service Organizations
