Taught Matthew and coached him in middle school at Friends Academy. Was a great kid and always smiling and fandunny. Mom, Jackie was the athletic directors secretary and also is a great person with wonderful personality.
Matt, think of you every year since this happened. Proud of what you achieved in life and congratulations on your family. Think of you every September and know you are in a good place to watch over your family.
Peace be with you. Bill Melillo

I never met you Matt.
I just wanted to personally thank you for being such a fine person and role model for your children. The rest must be left unsaid for there are no adequate words to express my deep sorrow. No evil can ever take away or diminish the love you shared with so many. May God bless your family and friends with peace and understanding until you are all reunited in Christ Jesus.

To me a long time to write. I had not seen Matt in quite a while. We grew up in Glen Cove together while attending ST. Pats and Glen Cove High. Played hockey together(both Islanders fans). So many good times. 911 was hard enough. When you find out someone you knew had died there it just made the pain that much worse. I will never forget you Matt. God bless your family.

Good afternoon. A few days ago i happened to be at the world trade center, and
I was able to obtain visitors passes to see the memorial. I hadnt been to the wtc since i was about 13, and im now 28. when i entered the memorial location i felt such a wave of sadness come over even though i didnt know anyone that had suffered this agonizing trajedy. I went the south pool and just watched and thought. I then walked over to the north pool and watched again. All Of a sudden i looked down at the names and i jumped and gasped. I actually knew the name i was looking at. Matthew T. Mcdermott. My friend who was with me didnt understand until i told her i recognized this name. She didnt believe me
Until i told her the story about matther being a graduate of eckerd college. I too am a graduate of eckerd college, and i remembered the plaque sitting on the tree on the walk up to the galbraith building every single day. Whats most curious is how does someone like me walk up the the exact spot without ever having known him, and amongst the thousands of names on that memorial do i walk up to this persons name, and i actually knew his story and where he came from..... The goosebumps were unreal and i know that his spirit and the spirit of thousands others are there with us every day. I i hope ypur family continues to feel his presence everyday, and my
Best wishes go out to his family.

Sincerely,

The first time I ever visited America, I was invited, on the evening of my arrival, to a golf tournament by a close friend of Matts. The tournament turned out to be in honour of Matthew T. McDermott (I still have the shirt) at Isla del Sol at St. Pete Beach. It will forever be my memory of the civility of those American people that I met, his father and his wife around the practice putting green. Although I never met Matthew T McDermott, I was left with the most personal and tangible sense of the loss, not only of the family, but of the American Nation itself.
Not forgotten.

On vacation at St Pete Beach I was fortunate enough to be invited, on my very first trip to the US, to play in the Matthew T. McDermott Memorial Golf Tournament. at Isla Del Sol.
Meeting with his Dad and widow is something I always remember as they asked what the date 1744 was on my golf shirt!!
Check that out, but on the occassion of this particular date (9/11), may I salute the family of Matthew, a man I never even knew, but who is very much in my thoughts today.
Peace, love and golf

Hello Matt's family: I was just looking at the NY Times online about 9/11 - remembering. One of the only names I recall is Matt's because at the time we lived in Fla and one of our best friends was Joe Runnels. He had spoken of Matt after he'd made it home from NY -- he was at Cantor on 9/10 and had worked with Matt. I still have a photocopy of Joe standing in front of the WTC with the date of 9/10 on it. Now when I think of Cantor, I think of Matt. I, of course, never knew him, but through Joe and Susan, feel connected. My prayers continue to be with you...your daughters and the baby, whether a he or she. I hope your life has been filled with blessings in these 4 years, and that the pain has dimmed. But, none of us will ever forget. God Bless You all.

My deepest sympathy to a wonderful family. I never met Matt but I live at the same complex as Susan's Mom Ruth. Ruth keep us all aprised of the children's progress, and Kathy too keeps us informed. MY husband's brother in law is a Navy pilot and he dedicated his tour in the Mideast to Matthew McDermott. God bless and keep all of your memories of Matthew deep in your hearts.

Sue --

You were my TA for George Odiorne's class at Eckerd College. I was driving down the one day, noticed a law office McDermott and McDermott, and instantly thought of both of you. A day later, I got the sad news. I am SO sorry for your loss. We also had an office in the WTC and lost some great people. We can never forget. I hope you have found the strength to get through each day, one at a time. God bless.

Sue, Kelly, Kara & Mathew

Although you never stray far from my thoughts and prayers, today my attention is constanly with you. As we look back at this terrible tragedy, I know the celebration of Matts life and the influence he brought to his family and friends never ends. Sue you are everything Matt ever told me about you. No wonder why he would always look for you hiding behind that tree on the 9th hole with that special smile on his face. Divot (as the boys knew him on the course) was a special friend. And alhough we had barely met, I knew that friends like Matt come only once in a very long time. He was more than special and unique and redefined the meaning of caring. I miss him and Betsy and I hold you, Matt and your family forever in our prayers.

God Bless

Matthew T. McDermott is the name on a button I was given to wear for our performance of Mozart's Requiem, the "Rolling Requiem" which is being done - world wide - on September 11, 2002. Because of our proximity to the international date line, I guess ours will be the last service of the rolling Requiem. As we sing of "perpetual light," my prayers and thoughts will be of Matthew and the McDermott family.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of Matt McDermott. So many were great people were taken from us that day.

I think I have the "correct" Matt. My name is Tony Valenti. You did not know me personally but we spoke many times on the phone. You used to pick it up when I was calling for Carl Peralta. Carl perished that day also. My last conversation with you was just after the attack. I called to speak to Carl. Carl was not around and I asked if all of you were OK and what was going on.

You said they were trying to get you out. I asked again if you could see Carl around. You could not but you assured me he was OK. I told you to get out and tell Carl I called. That was the last time I spoke to you or anyone at Cantor. I tried calling a minute later but no one picked up the phone.

I remember how we made fun of Carl and I distictly remember how calm you were when we talked that morning. You spoke matter of factly.

Rest in peace Matt. May God bless your family and friends. I am sure you are playing 36 holes a day with Carl and Tom.

Sue,

I was so sorry to learn of the loss of Matt through the Profiles in Courage tribute on the Golf Channel. I had lost touch over the years with both of you after the summers in Ammagansett, but I still have very fond golf memories of Matt driving us out to Montauk at 4AM to stand in line for tee times. I certainly learned a lot playing with Matt who had the patience of a saint putting up with such a high handicapper like me.

My heart goes out to you and your family. God bless you.

I am searching for the mother of a "Matthew" that was lost at the WTC. If you are the mother who had a long conversation with one of the therapy dog handlers at Pier 94 who made a special promise to you, please get in touch with me. The promise has come true.

Susie: I remember you as a beautiful child with dark hair at our father's baseball games with your Mom and sister Kathy. My best friend from high school was Susie and her sister was Kathy, so I always remembered you girls. We are all grown now. My Dad, Eddie Monsaert, stays in touch and sees your Dad often. I heard your new son Matthew is beautiful and looks just like Matt. My thoughts and prayers are always with you. Maybe we get to meet in Packanack someday. May peace be with you and your children always. Love to you, Pattie Monsaert

Susan-

God bless you and your children.

I was so saddened to see that Matt

had been a victim of 911 at the WTC.

I worked with Matt- and helped him

with his trades- years ago at KP &

Co. He was such a great guy! I remember very much how particular he was with the way he looked in his clothes and the way he walked fast! Long strides, but he got there fast! I just can't believe he was part of that! I told one of our former supervisors who is now retired in Boca Raton, Fl. He was shocked and saddened too. Again, God bless you and the girls. I have said prayers for your family.

Susan:

We only met for a week at the beach discussing how you were a waitress in Boonton and which beaches were better (NJ Shore or LI) and it hit me and Marnie with heavy hearts to hear of your loss. We contimplated writing and calling, but never found the right way to express our sympathy, knowing we only had a brief meeting, and we are sorry to say we did not.

Our thoughts have been with you since that terrible day and we hope for the best for you and your family.

We are very sorry for your loss of Matthew. Susan, may Matthew's life and love live on in you, Kara, Kelly and baby to be. May you feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts to give you comfort. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
