Matthew Clay Schatz, 61, known affectionately as Matt to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in
Sullivan, Missouri, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Born on March 29, 1963, in the same tight-knit community, to his parents, Derl and Dema (Neff) Schatz, Matt's kind and selfless spirit was a beacon of light to all who knew him.
Matt's early years were rooted in the values of hard work and community. He grew up on the family farm, making many memories with his siblings and five close cousins, where his love for the outdoors blossomed. He attended Holy Martyrs Catholic School and Sullivan High School, graduating in 1981 with a strong sense of purpose. Continuing his education at Linn Tech, Matt obtained his certification as a machinist, a skill that would define his professional path for years to come.
Professionally, Matt dedicated 34 years of his life to Hellebusch Tool & Dye of Washington, MO. His tenure there was marked by unparalleled commitment and craftsmanship, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Before joining Hellebusch, Matt honed his skills at Carden Machine Shop, where his talent for precision and detail became evident.
In May of 1986, Matt's life was further enriched when he married Cassilda Korte. Their loving union brought forth their son, Steven, who became the pride and joy of Matt's life. As a father, Matt was as devoted and loving as he was in all other aspects of his life.
Beyond his family and work, Matt was an active and cherished member of the Eagles, where he spent many hours in the fellowship of friends at the local hall. His involvement in the community through the Eagles was a testament to his belief in service and camaraderie.
Matt's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. Growing up on the farm instilled in him a lifelong love for country living, hunting, and fishing. In his later years, he developed a fervent interest in sports, cheering on the Mizzou Tigers and the Cardinals with the same enthusiasm he brought to every endeavor. NASCAR races were also a favorite pastime, and he could often be found discussing the latest race with friends.
Known for his sarcastic humor, Matt had a rare ability to light up a room and bring smiles to the faces of those around him. He was consistently positive, even in the face of life's challenges, and his selfless nature meant he was always there for others, offering a helping hand or a word of encouragement.
Matt's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and laughter. He left an indelible mark on the lives of those he touched, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a void in the Sullivan community and beyond, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
Matt is survived by his son, Steven Schatz and wife, MacKenzie of
Sullivan, MO; his beloved grandchildren: Clay & Sadie; his mother, Dema Schatz of Bourbon; his siblings: Scarlett Stumpe of Linn, MO, Dirk Schatz of Bourbon, MO, Kirk Schatz of Sullivan and Sabrina Henning and husband, J.D. of Kansas City, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Derl Schatz and a brother-in-law, Rick Stumpe.
At Matt's request, an intimate Celebration of Life was held at the family farm. Cremation has taken place.
