Gone too soon, our sweet boy, Matthew Cord Scott, age 35, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Duke University Hospital. Cord entered this world on Sunday, August 14, 1988. He was born in Buncombe County at Memorial Mission Medical Center. Cord grew up in Haywood County, where he was loved by many.
Cord was a light in a very dark world. He loved and cared deeply for those in his life, unconditionally. He was well-known for his infectious smile and laughter, which he shared with anyone he met. Cord embodied the meaning of living your life to the fullest. He chased any dream he had and never strayed from his true self.
Cord was a Haywood County resident for most of his life until he started his dream of traveling. Over the last several years, Cord has traveled to multiple countries as well as across the United States. He also took a chance and lived in Athens, Greece, for three years. Oh, how he loved to adventure.
Cord was an avid singer, dancer, and choreographer, who loved theater. He has performed in shows, musicals, and dramas all of his life. One place he dearly loved was Hart Theater, where he was able to meet so many friends and was blessed with many opportunities. Cord was also able to share his love of arts with many of the younger generation across Western North Carolina. He taught at Asheville Performing Arts Academy, where he produced many shows and taught dance.
Those he'll meet in Heaven include his paternal grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Cord is survived by his parents, Marsha Scott Dorlan (Chris) and Mark Stamey (Kristie); brothers, Collin Dorlan and Mason Stamey; sister, Madison Corley; grandparents, Dawn Pless Shook, Bill Scott, Bob Dorlan, and Fannie Dorlan; several uncles, aunts, and cousins who loved him deeply and his four-legged kids, Merle and Linus. He will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:00pm on Thursday, March 28, 2024, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
Donations may be made in Cord's memory to Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 W Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605, or any current medical research organization.
Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be caring for the Scott family.
We love you, sweet boy. We hope you are dancing! Spread your wings and fly.

I went to Pisgah High for a while in 2005, and Cord is one of the people who I remember. He was always so positive and lifted whatever mood people might be in. I didn't really know anyone, but Cord never seemed to care (in a good way). He walked right up, said hello, acted as though we'd be friends for years. He was a light, no question. We didn't share any classes (different grades) but every interaction that we had was a pleasant one. I am grateful to Cord for his kindness, and for making a young me feel like I had someone in my corner and who was kind. I am shocked and saddened that Cord has passed, and I am so sorry to his family. I hope that his family knows that he made a more positive impact than many people ever do. The world is a little less bright and kind without him in it.
