Matthew James Stacey Jr., 55, of Fort Washakie, Wyoming, passed away on February 28, 2026, at his home in Fort Washakie, Wyoming.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2026, at Rocky Mountain Hall in Fort Washakie, Wyoming.
A wake will be held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Rocky Mountain Hall and will be taken to the family home afterward.
Matthew James Stacey Jr. was born on August 30, 1969, to Matthew Stacey Sr. and Marieta Shoyo in Lander, Wyoming.
Matthew enjoyed singing with his drum groups throughout the years, including Big Mountain, Highwind, and Woodstock. He loved arts and crafts, planting, bustle making, and making drumsticks. He danced in Sun Dance and enjoyed singing at Sun Dance and powwows. Matthew also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing arcade games, listening to music, and going to casinos. He especially enjoyed driving his mom whenever she wanted to go. Some of his favorite foods were Chinese food, shrimp, clam chowder, and pizza.
In his younger years, Matthew loved camping, riding horses, and spending time outdoors with his siblings and cousins. He adored his nieces, nephews, and grandkids.
Matthew worked in his early years at Bottle Hollow Restaurant and the gas station in Ft. Duchesne, Utah. He also worked at the Denver Airport, the 477 Program in Fort Washakie, the Warm Valley Senior Center as a driver and dishwasher, and for Shoshone Tribal Service.
He attended Fort Washakie Grade School, LVHS, St. Stephens High School, and East High in Salt Lake City, Utah. He later graduated from WIHS and went on to attend trade school for mechanics.
Matthew was preceded in death by his father, Matthew J. Stacey Sr., Henry Walker-Bad Soldier-Stacey, Vida Braman, Michael, Marie, Genevieve, Stella, George, Stacey, Mark Stacey Sr., Jason Stacey Sr., Dennison and Lottie Shoyo (Long Hair), Linda Shoyo, Lenore Shoyo, Kenneth Chuck Shoyo, Roy Shoyo, Ben Shoyo, Frank Shoyo Jr., Genie “Fran” Shoyo, Michael Shoyo, Victor Large, Chachee Chapoose, C. Joanne Hurtado (Shoyo), Andar Shoyo, Isabelle Gardner, Alvin and Mary Lee Long Hair, Willard Gardner, Victor Gardner, Carma Long Hair (Jack), Alta Appenay, Laurie Patterson, Eugene LaRose, Cathy Standing Rock, Bunny Shoyo, Harrison and Anna Marie Shoyo, Rosey Long Hiar, Laurie Patterson, and Doreen Cuch.
He is survived by his mother, Marieta Shoyo; siblings, Bo Badsoldier/Stacey (Sherman), Nolan Stacey Sr. (Andi), Kris Stacey Sr. (Shay), April Kaulaity (Stefan), aunts, Patricia, Zita, Argo Shoyo, George Stacey, and Cati DeCamp; nieces, Kylissa, Nani, Nadia, Stacey, Temiah and Shotahni Kaulaity, Sonora, De’Nae, Anissa StandingRock, Russi Hurtdao, Char Shoyo, Odessa (Chris) Sherman, Jacinta, Anica Eagle, Aimee Shoyo, Evie John, Delaney Shoyo, Darcy Shoyo, Diamond Shoyo, Nolan Stacey Jr., Riley Shoyo, Lamelia Metz, Amera St. Clair, Lily Sherman, Sha’leen Herrald, Romi Shoyo, Montie Long, Jennifer Lesspooch, Char Long Hair, Tee Long Hair, Marlaina Long Hair, June Gardner, S’ap (Florence) LaRose, Kenos (Robert), Long Hair, Rainy Long Hair, Bradford Long Hair, Kenson Loney, Linda and Pearl Tillman, JD and LB Roberts, Carolyn Shoyo, Martina (James) StandingRock, Aneeshia Hill, Kathy and Rocky Hill, Florine Villegas, Noah Monroe ; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
