My daughter was lucky enough to play viola with Matthias one summer at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and we were so impressed by him. We were deeply saddened to learn of his death. A donation has been made in his honor to Joey Fest, an annual charity event raising money for men's mental health.
May the many wonderful memories people are sharing bring you comfort.

I won't pretend that I knew Matthias very well, but he was close to my life in other ways. He came to the occasional party at my place, where he was always very full of conversation and soft kind smiles. When we got onto the conversation of music I recommended him a song, My Sputnik Sweetheart by Weatherday, and he took the time to say thank you for the recommendation, which meant a lot back then since it's over 13min long and not everyone's cup of tea, but I appreciated him taking the time anyways, and will always think of him when I hear that song.

Matthias was a volunteer with me during my time as a barista at the 86. I always looked forward to that shift and getting to see him. He was wonderful to talk to. So kind and hardworking. He would share about his week - and all his amazing musical endeavors - over the drinks I´d make for us. Late nights at the 86 remind me of Matthias. I´m thankful I got to spend them with him.

I cherished Matthias phone calls, especially since it is unusual for a young man to converse with his older Aunt. I love that he shared his C.D.s with me, as well as photos from his European trips. He always tried to discover my favorite book author & knowlegeably responded to info on Agatha Christie. He will be greatly missed & forever loved.

Matthias has been a friend full of curiosity and kindness. I always enjoyed any of our conversations together. He asked me about advice for traveling in Europe, about light vs dark roast coffee, about sign language, about my favorite saint Therese, and about various theological thoughts. He paid attention to my interests, knew how to have great conversations, and from Matthias I felt valued and appreciated. We enjoyed working together at Rohs St. Cafe and spending time at the Edge House.

Matthias has a special place in my heart. He welcomed me into the family at my wedding and stayed close the whole day to make sure that I "wouldn't be nervous". From a young age, he loved sharing his knowledge; I remember working on very difficult crossword puzzles he developed--he was very encouraging and even offered to make one 'a little bit easier' for me. He enjoyed learning new skills--I sent him various chiles as a cooking challenge and he not only used them, but reached out to tell me how much he enjoyed them. He could talk about any subject, but was a great listener as well. He had so much patience--teaching my kids Bocce ball rules over and over, even though the youngest ones were more interested in rolling them as hard as they could. Matthias will be deeply missed.

My first memory of Matthias was at game nights. He was one of those people you could feel the love others felt towards him.
