Mattie Bennett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tribute & Tallent Funeral and Cremations on Mar. 4, 2026.
Mattie D. Bennett, affectionately known as "Duddie" by her sisters and close family members, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026 in Charlotte, NC. She was 83 years old.

Mattie was born September 2, 1942 to the late John and Ada Banks Dewese in Rock Hill, SC. She graduated from Emmett Scott High School in 1960, where she was Class Treasurer, Queen of FFA and on the Speech Choir.

Mattie dedicated her life to Jehovah on May 14, 1961. During the past 65 years, she touched many lives with her wisdom, humor and unwavering spirit of perseverance. Mattie was a devoted teacher of the Bible while pioneering. The highlight of her service was attending the International Convention in Hawaii.

She was a proud mother, a loyal friend and the heart of every gathering. She was also a great seamstress and homemaker and enjoyed hosting countless get togethers for friends and family. Mattie had a passion for flower planting and had a great eye for decorating.

Mattie was a devoted wife for 55 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Anderson Bennett and her brother Leon Dewese, whose memories she cherished.

Left to celebrate her life are her six sisters, Rhina Whitlock of Charlotte, NC, Magdeline Ragsdale of Rock Hill, SC, Lucille (Charles) Cooper of Oxford, NC, Katie Paige of Rock Hill, SC, Roline (Leroy) Dukes of Wilmington, NC and Barbara (Leon) Brice of Rock Hill, SC; sister-in-laws Leila Jones of Simpsonville, SC, Luretta Kelly and Jean Bennett of Charlotte, NC.

Mattie is also survived by her two loving children, Andrea Bennett Washington and Kenneth La'Marick (Jonna) Bennett; her grandchildren Mario Bennett, Santario Murrell and Adriann Bennett. She also recognized Thomas Young, Adriann's brother, as her grandchild as well.

She also leaves behind her great grandson Maison Gordon Bennett, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and cherished friends.

Known for her giving heart and unshakable faith, Mattie left an impact on everyone's life that had the privilege to know her. Mattie was clearly loved and will be deeply missed. She was definitely a PHENOMONAL WOMAN.
