Mattie Brooke was born on July 8, 1927, in Paris, Arkansas. She passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on March 16, 2025 at her home in San Diego, CA.
She was a loving mother to Bruce Moore, Susan Witt, David Moore, and her late son, Chris Moore. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ardie Moore, and three cherished grandchildren: Stephanie Varao, Andrew Witt, and Richelle Allen.
She adored her three great-grandchildren: Blake, Aaron, and John. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Brooke.Mattie loved people and had a heart full of kindness. She dedicated 45 years to her career as a registered nurse at Scripps Hospital, a role she took immense pride in. She also had a passion for crocheting hats for children battling cancer at Children’s Hospital for many years.
Her faith was central to her life, and she found great comfort attending her Catholic church in Old Town.We will always remember her laughter, smile, hugs, strength, and compassion for others. Her granddaughter Stephanie, grandson Blake, and her beloved caregiver, Aga—who became like family—were by her side during her final years.
Stephanie and her grandmother shared a special bond as birthday twins, we will miss her dearly. Her daughter Susan was with her in her final months and days, ensuring she was surrounded by love and care. She adored her family with all her heart, as well as her friends and neighbors. And always responded with I love you more.
Her daughter, Susan, thanks her mother in heaven for always loving her and guiding her. She wants everyone to know that Mattie was smart, honest, and above all, incredibly kind.
