Maureen Joyce (Steed) Kane Age 89, of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, peacefully on October 30, 2025, after a multi-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Maureen was born in 1935 in Minster, Kent, England. She was raised during World War II in the nearby village of Birchington-on-Sea (Minnis Bay). She met her future husband, Donald (Don) Robert Kane, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, while working at the Commissary at Sculthorpe Royal Air Force Base in northern England in the late 1950s. After marriage in England, the couple moved to Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina. Their first son was born shortly thereafter. Their second son was born after Mr. Kane was transferred to Sewart Air Force Base in Tennessee. Finally, the couple moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where they lived until Mr. Kane retired from the military. The family then moved to Ligonier (Don was from Greensburg, PA).
Maureen earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA, and a Master of Arts in History from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA. She worked as a nurse technician at Torrance State Hospital for many years and was known by her neighbors as an avid gardener.
Maureen is survived by her two sons, Paul and Eric. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Gladys Steed (nee Court), her sister Joan (Moore), her brother Melvin, and her husband Don.
She will be interred with her husband, who is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia (there will be no graveside ceremony). Arrangements are private and under the direction of McCabe Funeral Home, Ligonier. A recorded online message will be available. Online condolences may be made at mccabefuneralhomespa.com.
