Maurice Kahawaii Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dodo Mortuary, Inc. - Hilo on Sep. 18, 2025.
Born to Daniel and Haruko Kahawaii on June 3, 1940. He attended Kahuku High and graduated from Lahainaluna High School (Maui) in 1958. He attended Church College of Hawaii (BYU) and graduated from the University of Hawaii and earned his BBA. In 1960, he got hired at the only company that he would work for his entire life, Chevron USA. He started in the warehouse, became a driver before working his way up to Terminal Superintendent. He worked on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island. He retired with 38 years of service in 1998. After retirement, he and Lani moved from Hilo to Kona where they enjoyed their new chapter of life. Maurice continued his service work with Lions Clubs International in Kona. He became the District Governor of Hawaii in 2003 and then an International Director in 2007 - 2009. He and Lani traveled the world, literally. He was a member of the Hawaiian Civic Club, West Hawaii Hawaiian Men's Golf Club and the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.
Maurice's pride and joy, besides his 55 Chevrolet, was his yard. He took great pride in working the land. He would spend hours mowing, weed whacking, planting and "trimming" the trees in his yard. He proudly grew white pineapple (sugarloaf), bananas, ulu and avocados along with countless tropical flowers, ti leaves, and palm trees.
He is survived by his wife, Lani Kahawaii. Daughters, Wendy (Steve) La'ulu, Sandy Kahawaii, April (Randy) Nishii, Carla Kahawaii, Adrianna (Christian) Kahawaii de Freitas and son, Paul (Katlin) Fonua. He is also survived by siblings, Florence Hatsuno Kapali, Mavis (Rodney) Yamada, Geraldine (Ron) Henry, Maydell Kahawaii Smith and Charlene Kahawaii Lobowski, 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
