I met Mr. Lucas & several other pro players in Memphis at, I believe, the Holiday Inn, in the Fall of 1978, as myself & several other fairly 'new Marines' had gone into the city for a weekend break from Navy Aviation schooling. There was a huge B-ball tournament in the city & I recognized Mr. Lucas & approached him; he & the others laughed as I called them 'Sir' & 'Gentlemen', as I was not too long out of Parris Island. I remembered that he had played @ Schenley HS, & being from close to Altoona, PA, I mentioned one of their former best, Billy Moore. That is when the warmth really opened up in him as he smiled & he said words to the effect of, "oh, yes, I remember Billy Moore; a great ballplayer"!
He graciously gave me his autograph for my brother & I'm ashamed to admit, it was not till last night that I learned that he had past away 12 years ago and at such a young age. I did not get to know this talented man in life, but I was blessed that the Lord allowed me to meet him one fine evening in the great city of Memphis, TN. My so-very belated condolences to his family & to all who loved him, as I know that life is never quite the same without, & that the love is never gone from the hearts. God bless!

To the Maurice Lucas Family,
Soon we will be approaching 10 years since our beloved cousin went on to join other family members that have departed to the heavens. He, like those before him, left us with many memorable moments that I will cherish forever. I will never forget how he embraced me and treated me like a fan and a friend. Our family time together whether I was visiting him at home or at any arena, he was always present as we shared family memories. His jokes and laughter was one of a kind. Just as unique as his on court skills. His words of wisdom will always stay in my heart and when I look up into the big blue sky I will always see "BIG LUKE'S" smile. Maurice, my cousin, my brother, my friend, you will never be forgotten. My deepest sympathy remains with his family as our loss is just a deep today as it was almost 10 years ago. Continue to Rest in Peace my brother with other family members you have joined. Much Love to the family always.

To The Lucas Family & Faithful;
I knew Maurice as a youngster, playing basketball on the Chauncey Drive and Francis Street courts in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. As the Clinton Family entry of this book says, it was about basketball with Maurice Lucas. I was a few years ahead of Maurice at Schenley H.S. and it gave me great pride to learn that Maurice Lucas and J. Kelly speared Schenley to the State Title for the 69-70 season. I followed Maurice's NBA career and smiled quite happily when he and Bill Walton lead the Trailblazers to the 77 NBA Title over the Philadelphia 76ers. It was very gratifying, to me, that one of the Hill District of Pittsburgh's own made it to the top of the basketball world. I'm quite late with this entry to Maurice's Memorial Guestbook, but it bothered me to learn that Maurice had been gone (to the Almighty Father)a while and I had no knowledge of his demise. The tributes and honors paid to Maurice, herein, are wonderful and deserved. I knew Maurice and the Lucas Family years ago. For you, the Lucas Family, now, my deepest condolences for your loss. K. Owens, Schenley Spartans, 64-65 (City Champions)

“REMEMBRANCE”
When you hear people talk about Luke, you will usually hear the word “Grate” mention as well great husband, great father, great brother, great son, great friend, great team mate, great citizen; all in all just a great guy.
For me, the one word I would use to describe him is genuine. Luke knew early in life he was blessed and he was truly thankful for his blessing because there was not one day that went by where he took this blessing for granted. I guess this is why he heart was always in the right place whether he was giving something back or giving of him self. When you were around Luke he had a way of making you feel good about yourself and you just knew you were in the presence of someone very special.
I’m sure all of us have taken a pause to reflect on our favorite memory or moment of Luke but for me each minute I spent with him is special, from our early childhood together well into our manhood.
Luke dealt with his illness with the same determination and toughness as he had during his playing days but the time had come for him to come out of the game; not for a time out or for a substitution but to take his place on God’s bench because now he is the “Enforcer” on God’s All-Star team. As I am writing this I have this image in my head of Luke outside the Pearly Gates, standing next to St. Peter with his arms folded across his chest, wearing a denim outfit and cap, looking out for all of us, watching our backs. I just smile and I’m comforted by the thought that he has my back.
Luke, we miss you but you will never be forgotten and you will be forever loved and in our hearts for I know that you are somewhere in heaven teaching the rest of the angels how to do the “Electric Glide”.
I Love you Reese

One of my favorite childhood memories is meeting Maurice Lucas at a basketball camp when I was 9 - 2 years after he led Portland to its only NBA title. He was my hero for most of my life - and I still light up when I talk about "my team" - the 77 Blazers.
I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to run into Mr. Lucas through my college and post-college travels, and in my professional life. He has always been a wonderful aquaintance to run into - because he was always so gracious, gregarious, and fun - quick with a smile.
I know your hearts are heavy, but I hope your many wonderful memories will provide comfort during the difficult times. My prayers are with you.

I was privileged to be covering the Suns for The Phoenx Gazette when Maurice joined the Suns. I well remember his first words to me: "You can call me Maurice, or you can call me Luke, but don't call me Mo." His smile and his laugh were contagious - I'll never forget. He was a sportswriter's delight, a gentleman, a fine man, basketball player and he doted on his family. I know he will be dearly missed.

To the Lucus Family, Maurice was very kind and giving and He is now a blessing to heaven as he continues to share the person he is with those who have gone on before him. He will certainly be missed but earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. He left a positive mark on the world as an example to be followed. God bless you richly.

As members of the former Francis Street families, we were remembering those kids who played ball using the "monkey bars" as hoop rings, then, taking the game down to the lower Francis Street basketball courts. Ricky C, Reesee L, Rocky W, Jeep K, Kevin B, Frank B, Bubby W, The Howze Boys, and others that I have missed. They loved playing hoops. Hoops was the name of the game for the Francis Street boys. So much talent lead by the leadership of Reesee L & Ricky C. Anyone who brought out a basketball, was destine to play hoops that day with one of the biggest and best hoops player know to the Francis Street families--Reesee Lucas. We had the pleasure of seeing him at Robert Vann, Herron Hill, Schenley, then TV with Marquette and the NBA. May he rest in peace with the basketball greats.

"I wanted to express my condolences to Maurice Lucas' family. I was 17 years old when he led the Portland Trail Blazers along with Bill Walton to the NBA championship in 1977. I saw many of the games that year including the first preseason game against the Lakers. Jerry West was town to see the game and had glowing remarks about Maurice's play that night. Watching that team play on a regular basis was like having a Bolshoi 'basketball' ballet right there in your backyard for a whole year. R.I.P. LUUUUUUUUUUUKE!" : ( Philippe Sauvie (Portland, OR

Maurice Lucas represented Pittsburgh well in regard to his strong work ethic. Maurice is among the “greats” in terms of how you play the game! I remember to this day attending a basketball clinic at the old Pitt field house and the Schenley team was there and provided examples of drills to improve your game. Led by Maurice I was in awe to watch someone so special and talented, I learned so much that day watching Maurice showing all of us how it was done. I followed his college and professional career and was so proud of him and proud to tell anyone I could that he was from Pittsburgh!
To the Lucas family, you have my deepest heartfelt sympathy and I pray to God for peace and comfort during this difficult time. Even though this must be a very difficult time for your family to know that Maurice is no longer suffering or in pain you will find comfort and peace as well.
Sincerely,

I remeber being a nine year old kid in the summer of 1971 being in the lesuire-learn summer program. the activites were at univ. of Pitt and so was lunch. we would ride pass schenleny and see the state championship banner in the front and everybody always cheered. Big Luke was sometimes on the bus and he insired me to play basketball. maurice was that pioneer for sam clancy, armand gilliam, and now dejaun blair. I still remeber him picking me up to the basket so I could dunk the ball.Maurice Lucas will go down as the greatest hill district ballplayer ever. there should be an award named after him. I remember the first time I was able to attend a game with my dad at the Memorial Coliseum. When they introduced the players, I was aghast that they were "booing" Maurice Lucas, my favorite player. So sorry we lost a wonderful person and community leader.

I want to offer my sincere condolences to the whole Lucas family. I have many fond memories of watching Maurice Lucas as a Blazer, and then there are the recent memories where I once again got to see him as he sat across the court from my seats at the OSU games when his son David played there. I never met him, but he was my all-time favorite Blazer player. He will be missed by so many people. I lost my father to bladder cancer also...it was one of the most difficult things I've dealt with in my life. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family of Maurice Lucas. It is with my deepest sympathy that I write this message. It seems like only the other day that we came out of Schenley, 1971, and shared the dreams that most young people our age shared. Today is truly a time that will be remembered like that day 39 years ago, for different reasons indeed, but one to be remembered nonetheless. God bless and keep you all, and God bless you Luke.

To the Family of Maurice Lucas, I remember him in the hallways of Schenley High School and what a nice person he was even then. Never mean or rude to anyone or full of himself because he was a fantastic ball player. He truly followed our school moto of the time: Enter to Learn go Forth to Serve.

Mr.Lucas was a consistant worker on his NBA teams and always brought "it" on the basketball floor. He didn't brag and bring attention to himself. He just did his job day in and day out. A great player and role model.

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

This fierce competitor gave us his all. I just wish you had been a Celtic. Your class, dignity, competitiveness were your hallmarks, eclipsed only by your respect. Heaven just became a whole lot better. God Bless the Lucas Family in your time of sorrow.

When I was younger he was in N.Y.C for a game at Madison Square Garden. I was in Grand Central Station and I saw this hugh figure of a man walking through. I went up to him and greeted him for I knew that it was Maurice Lucus, he was so kind and greeted me with a handshake. To The Lucas Family, Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. and God's peace, which is so great we cannot understand it,will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. I have to go back when Maurice and his Pittsburgh Schenley HS team crushed our Norristown HS team in the state championship game in 1971.
I followed him then when on the freshmen team at Marquette University came down to Notre Dame and played our team with Gary Brokaw and Dwight Clay ( Pittsburgh 5th Avenue). Always a great competitor into his days with Portland.
A tough and skilled ballplayer. Someone to be respected without the unnecessary displays of the modern NBA.
Pittsburgh and Marquette will miss a terrific individual. Prayers for his family.

The Pittsburgh community says good bye to one of it's brightest sons. I remember the one on one battles with Ronnie Hightower. Thanks for the memories. God bless. Rest in peace.

Originally we were lucky to have Maurice the basketball player. Over the years we were even more fortunate to have Maurice the citizen, along with his family, living in our area.

My sincere condolences to the Lucas family. You folks do not know me but I met Maurice and his brother many years ago. My dad coached a little league baseball team in Homewood and Mo and his brother and myself played on that team. We moved to Cleveland and I never saw him again but I remember what a great athlete he was. Rest in peace.
