Maurice Anthony Spruell, a name that resonated with warmth, laughter, and unparalleled charm, departed this world on September 9, 2025, at the age of 88.
Maurice was known for his impeccable sense of style. A sharp dresser with a keen eye for fashion, he approached life much like an artist would his canvas — with creativity, confidence, and attention to detail. Those fortunate enough to share his company recall conversations filled with wit, laughter, and spirited discussions about politics and sports. His stories flowed freely, leaving behind memories as vibrant as his presence.
Born on May 29, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas, Maurice spent part of his childhood in Luling, Texas, before returning to Fort Worth. A proud graduate of Dunbar High School, he became the first male student to receive the Citizenship Award. He was also named Best All-Around senior athlete and recognized as one of the city’s top running backs. As a “Model Student,” he was offered an art scholarship to Langston University and a football scholarship to Prairie View A&M University.
Maurice gave his life to Christ at an early age. In 1974, he united with The New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Isadore Edwards, Jr., and the present Pastor Marcus R. McDonald where he served faithfully as a Deacon, member of the Sanctuary Choir, coordinator of the Baptist Men’s Fellowship Chorus, and member of the Baptist Men’s Fellowship.
His professional journey reflected his determination and strong work ethic. He began his career as a supervisor at Alcon Laboratories. In 1968, he completed an 800-hour course in Aircraft Assembly and, the following year, joined Hobbs Trailer as a Body Assembler. During this time, he also pursued courses in upholstery and financial management and later attempted his own business venture. After more than 20 years of dedicated service, Maurice retired from Hobbs Trailer in 1990.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Maurice remained active in his community and city. In 2003, he ran for City Councilman of District 8, continuing his commitment to public service.
Maurice leaves behind his five children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends. His departure leaves a significant void, but his legacy of kindness, laughter, and love endures.
Visitation will be held on September 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM until close at Golden Gate Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas. A funeral service will follow on September 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church.
In these shared moments, we honor a remarkable life. Maurice’s spirit lives on in the hearts of all he touched.
