Max Alden Long, 95-year-old longtime Vinita resident and rancher passed on November 1, 2025.
He was born April 14, 1930, in Braman, Oklahoma. He attended school in Bluejacket, Oklahoma and served for two years in the U.S. Army, as well as six years (three active and three inactive) in the National Guard. He was a longtime farm implement and small engine mechanic, retiring from Burnidge Welding Supply. For the last several decades, Max could be found on his tractor working the pecan orchard on his farm that he called "Starvation Acres."
He and his wife, Shirley, celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in June.
Max had a sharp mind, a kind smile, and a pocketful of Grandpa candy.
Max is preceded in death by his parents Gwendolyn and Everett Long, brother Arnold Long, and sister Verna Williams.
Surviving family includes: Wife, Shirley Jane (Giles) Long of the home, Daughter, Teresa Long and Ken Threadgill of Tulsa, Son, John Long and Karen of Vinita, and Brother Frank Long and Stephanie of Bluejacket.
He was most proud of his four grandchildren: Justin Long and Krista of Vinita, Kyle Long and Melina of Pryor, Kevin Long and Megan of Vinita, Veronica Threadgill of Bartlesville, and eight great-grandchildren: Raegan, Addison, Tucker, Sophia, Donnie, Everett, Max McCoy and Olivia, in addition to two bonus grandchildren: Heather Henrichsen and Darwin and family of Bixby, and Amber Richardson and Todd and family of New Braunfels, Texas, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Vinita First United Methodist Church food pantry in memory of Max.
Family visitation will be Wednesday, November 5, 2025, from 5-7 PM in the Burckhalter-Highsmith Chapel.
Services are set for 1:00 PM Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Vinita First United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephanie Crogan officiating.
Arrangements are under the care of Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral & Cremation Services of Vinita, OK. "Vinita's only locally family owned and operated funeral home."
