Norman Max Poe was born February 11, 1936, to Lyle and Mabel (Maxwell) Poe in Woodbine, Iowa. He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1953 and Wayne State College in 1958. Max married Mary Belle Boustead on August 25, 1956, in Woodbine. After college, he taught two years in the Cumberland-Massena school system before the couple returned to their hometown of Woodbine, where Max taught junior high social studies, driver's education and coached junior high football, boys basketball and boys track. He taught for 40 years, retiring in 1999. An accomplished singer, Max was a charter member of his beloved Noteables and sang at countless weddings and funerals. He loved to fish, watch sports (and give his son a hard time about the Cubs and Nebraska), woodworking, drinking coffee (he made many trips to Casey's with his family and grandchildren) and lounging on the front porch with his friends. Max was a member of the Woodbine United Methodist Church and past president of the local Kiwanis Club. He also served as a volunteer fireman for 20 years. After retirement, he loved to volunteer to deliver meals for the Golden Age Center and help with the sing-a-longs at Rose Vista. Max died on Friday, January 4, 2013, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 24 days. Max was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Bud. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Poe of Woodbine, IA; three children, Barry Poe of Brunsville, IA, Kim (Tom) Braun of Jefferson, IA, Jill (Hal) Haight of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren Laura Poe, Danny Poe, Allie Haight, Haley Haight and Landon Braun; three sisters Sharon Hodges and Marlys Abbott of West Des Moines, IA and Jeanne Beeghley of Dubuque, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
