When I got orders for shore duty in Puerto Rico in April 1977, the first get together I attended was the monthly potluck the FIL-AM had on base where Max Santiago welcomed all the newcomers specially the single Sailors like me. He mentored me and he led by example. He instilled in us to keep charging and be helpful to others. He wanted to share our culture on base during the cultural heritage celebration with folk dances, food tasting and some pep talk. Left PR in Feb 80 and did not see him until 2007 in Jacksonville, where he visited me at the Southside Blvd Asian food store. It was like seeing "Dad" after a long break. Fair winds and following seas.

My heart goes out to the family of this great man. Vickie and Don have been my friends for many years and very blessed to have them in my life. Max sure has lead a wonderful life and has given so much. I didn't realize how much until I read this beautiful obituary. A very honorable man sure will be missed by many.
