Maxine Alice Berstein

Maxine Alice Bernstein, known as Maggie, died peacefully at home in Burbank, California on March 1, 2026. She was 94 years old. A native of Long Island, and a graduate of Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, she attended Berkley, graduated from Harvard, and received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Cornell. In 1976 she moved to southern Vermont, where she lived for nearly 40 years and maintained a private practice as a psychologist. In 2015 she moved to southern California. Maggie was a devoted practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, a student of Chögyam Trungpa and a meditation instructor. She and her then husband, J.S. Bernstein, published a translation of Claude Lévi-Strauss: An Introduction, by Octavio Paz. Maggie was energetic, and with a keen sense of humor. She loved travel and theatre, and she was an avid amateur pianist. She is survived by three sons, Robert and Jonathan Teicher, and Jeffrey Bernstein, and three grandchildren, Laura Teicher, Sam Teicher, and Celia Deming-Bernstein.
