Maxine Renner Eberle 88, of Sugarcreek, died Tuesday June 23, 2009 at 8:15 PM in Walnut Hills Nursing Home at Walnut Creek. Born August 6, 1920 she was the daughter of farmers, the late Jacob and Amelia (Youngen) Renner of Ragersville. Two brothers Clayton and Dorren Renner and her husband of 43 years William C. Eberle preceded her in death. Maxine is the last of 35 grandchildren who were born to Charles and Caroline (Honebarger) Renner.She is survived by twin daughters Betsy Hollis of John's Island, S. C. and Roberta "Bobbie" (David) Werner of Westlake, O; grandchildren Samuel (Tracy) Yount of Atlanta, Ga., Holly (Greg) Good of Columbus, Robert Spitzer of New York, Sarah Hollis of Charleston, S.C., Stephan Hollis of Charleston, S.C., David Werner of New Haven, Conn. and Michael Werner of Columbus; great grandchildren Sophia and Samuel Yount of Atlanta and Brayden Good of Columbus.Maxine graduated from Ragersville High School in 1936 and New Philadelphia High School in 1938, attended Oberlin College, Beckwith Business College and was employed at the Tuscarawas County Treasurer's office prior to entering the U.S. coast Guard Women's Reserve (SPARS) for 3 years. She is a WWII Veteran where she attained the rank of Lt. (j.g.). In later years she was employed by Dr's. Edgar and Miller at the Sugarcreek Veterinary Clinic and worked as a writer for the Budget Newspaper at Sugarcreek. With an avid interest in genealogy and local history she wrote 3 family histories and assisted in 9 others, translated 25 early church histories from German into English for which she received the prestigious Zeisberger-Heckewelder award. She also wrote 3 area church histories and the 1980 sesquicentennial history of Auburn Township. In 2009 she was honored by the Ragersville Historical Society for her many years of service to the organization. She was also a charter member of the organization and served as secretary until 2005. She was also a charter member of the Alpine Hills Historical Society at Sugarcreek and a member of the Zion United Church of Christ at Ragersville, the Sugarcreek post of the American Legion, the Tuscarawas County Historical Society and the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society.Funeral services will be held Saturday June 27, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the Zion United Church of Christ at Ragersville. Rev. Edward Morrison and Rev. Welton Stein will officiate and burial will follow in Ragersville Cemetery where the Sugarcreek American Legion will conduct military graveside services. A lunch and reception for those attending will follow services in the great hall of the church. Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 PM in the Smith-Varns Funeral Home at 1018 W. main Street Sugarcreek. The family suggests memorials be made to the Ragersville Historical Society or the Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ.
