Maxine L. Nickless was born on December 22, 1943 in Ainsworth, NE to Glarice G. and Ethel L. (Herbaugh) Mizner, the first of nine children. She attended school in Thedford, NE, staying with her grandparents until she graduated there with the class of 1965. She then moved to O’Neill, NE, where she was employed as a nurse’s aide at the nursing home.
During this time, Maxine met James A. Nickless and they were married on October 8, 1966. They moved to Norfolk, NE, where Maxine worked in the sanitation department as a custodian at the Norfolk Regional Center and at the Nebraska Veterans’ Home.
Maxine retired back in Ainsworth. She enjoyed doing embroidery and the challenge of putting puzzles together. She also loved playing cards with her family and friends.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; and sister, Edith Jefferis. She is survived by her brother, Jim Mizner of Johnstown, NE; six sisters, Marilyn Jefferson of Bassett, NE, Bonnie Belmont of Newport, NE and Sharon Goff, Mary Turley, Sylvia (Joe) Moody and Patty Hughbanks, all of Ainsworth; mother-in-law, Darleen Mahlendorf of Ainsworth; three brothers-in-law, John (Jennifer) Nickless of O’Neill, and Justin (Jenny) Nickless and Dewey Jefferis, all of Ainsworth; along with nieces, nephews and other family members.
A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at the Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth. Pastor Gary Graesser officiated at the service. The Alan Jackson CD Selections played were “Amazing Grace”, “Old Rugged Cross” and “I’ll Fly Away.” A Private Family Inurnment was held on July 5, 2025 in the Stuart Cemetery in Stuart, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family in Maxine’s name for future designation.
