Shaw Funeral Home - ViciMaxine Charlton Turner of Enid, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord and Savior after a beautifully full life. Born on December 20, 1944, in DeKalb, Mississippi, to Malcom and Johnnie-Bell (Wiggins) Charlton she passed from this life on March 3, 2026, in her home of 50 years just as she had wished.
Maxine grew up in Mississippi, graduating from New Hope High School in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1963. She would work for many years at a hosiery mill in Grenada, Mississippi, while enjoying life to the fullest with close friends and family.
In 1975, Maxine went on a blind date, taking a chance on love with a fireman from Enid, Oklahoma. A year later, on December 27, 1976, Maxine married the love of her life, Terry Linwood Turner in Enid and they were married for 34 years until his death in 2011.
Now calling Enid her home, she attended Autry obtaining her Licensed Practical Nurse certification before attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Later, Maxine attended Southern Nazarene University, where she earned a master’s degree.
Maxine began working at Integris Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid, as a urology nurse before finding her true passion in gerontology. Maxine opened the Skilled Nursing Facility at Bass Hospital as the Director of Gerontology where she was known for providing love and dignity to her patience. Eventually, Maxine became the Quality and Risk Management Director before retiring after nearly 30 years of dedicated service in 2005.
After retirement, Maxine did not slow down. She continued her many years of voluntary service with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the United Way. Maxine, along with two of her best friends and colleagues, started the Enid Community Clinic, which is still operational today. She was passionate about public service even into her later years, saying “I have been blessed in my life and so I pay it forward.”
In addition to volunteering, Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, but nothing brought her more joy than that of her grandsons, as they were the true light of her life. Maxine, affectionally called “Mamaw” was never happier than when she was loving on her boys.
Maxine leaves behind her daughter, Tara Charlton Turner-Coleman and husband Justin, of the home, grandson Kaleb Alan Coleman of Jones, Oklahoma, Charlton Kane Coleman, Kassin Linwood Curtis Coleman, Kamden Aaron Coleman, and Turner Kage Coleman, all of the home. She will be missed dearly by her sisters-in-love, Twila Maddox and husband Don of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Frankie Brand and husband Phil of Homer, Louisiana, special friend Thomas James of Grenada, Mississippi, and her two angle caretakers, Kim Martin and Krystal Garcia, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and loving friends.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Mitchell Chartlon, Wendell Charlton, Gail Charlton, Joseph Jones, and Bernice Sickles.
