Celebrating the Life of Melba Peagler Merchant

November 4, 1929 – March 26, 2026

Melba Peagler Merchant, a cornerstone of the Branch and Line Prairie communities for nearly a century, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 96. A woman defined by her grit, devotion, and vibrant spirit, Melba leaves behind a legacy as rich and enduring as the Mississippi soil she tended.

Melba lived a life rooted in family and Hard work. Born in 1929, Melba’s journey was one of deep connection to the land and her loved ones. In 1946, she married the love of her life, James Merchant. Together, they built a life centered on the farm, raising cattle, chickens, and crops with a shared determination. While James worked the fields, Melba balanced the demands of the farm with a career as an accountant in the local poultry industry. Sewing her own clothes and having a yearly summer garden filled with corn, peas, okra, squash, and tomatoes was important to her. Through their combined "grit," they provided a stable, loving foundation for their growing family.

Melba, the family matriarch, was a "fierce" lover of her family. Her two daughters, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren were the center of her world. She was the family’s steady hand, known for her sharp wit, sage advice, and her legendary, reliable weather reports. To her family, she was more than just a mother and grandmother; she was a "servant leader" who taught them the value of hard work.

Beyond the farm, Melba found joy and expression in her art. Inspired by the likes of Bob Ross, she spent time with her circle of artist friends, capturing the beauty of the South on canvas. Her specialty was painting flowers, specifically the iconic Mississippi magnolia—a flower that, much like Melba herself, symbolized dignity and perseverance.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Charlice Merchant Goforth (the late Dale Goforth) and Celia Merchant Sheets (Dutch Sheets), five devoted grandchildren (Leah Barter, Dax Goforth, Matt Goforth, Sarah Weinberg, Hannah Magness), and eight precious great-grandchildren (Olivia, Sydney, Lincoln, Major, Jack, Luke, Mason and Hope). She will also be missed by her many extended family members and the communities of Morton, Line Prairie, and Branch, where her friendships spanned several generations.

Melba was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James; her brothers Ted Peagler and Troy Peagler; her sisters Etoile Peagler Merchant and Mary Estelle Peagler Hawley.

Today, we honor our beloved matriarch who loved well, worried well, prayed often, and worked hard. Her artistry brushstrokes may have stilled, but the colors she added to the lives of those whom she loved will never fade.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Psalm 116:15)
