Melba Rose Harper was born Feb 25th, 1931, in Hannibal, Missouri, to Samuel Grant Harper and Addie Pearl Musgrove. Melba was proud to be a Cherokee descendant. She was Confirmed into the Christian Religion at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lynwood. In 1957 she had her first communion. Later in the 70's she attended Calvary Chapel Downey for church and Bible studies.
In 1951 when mom and dad were dating, she wrote in a little diary I found "one time", "two times," "three times" each day that my dad said he loved her with her 3rd time being "I love him too".. She was married to Gilbert Sosack July 14, 1951, in TX.
She raised 5 kids, 4 girls and 1 boy, helping with grandkids too. She is survived by 4 children, 13 grandchildren, 25 Great Grands and 5 great-great Grands.
Mom always saw to it that all the children were dressed in styli. Sewing clothes, making crocheted ponchos, sweaters and whatever other patterns she could get her hands on...! Mom loved to bake..! She would make millions of Christmas cookies and send them to the entire families, given to people at the Clinic as well as her hairdresser.... Mom loved visits from family members and telephone calls from all the grandchildren...
It's no secret that Mom loved yarn. The whole house was full of it even at the top of a cabinet in the bathroom. and she knew what to do with it..! She crocheted thousands of Afghans, lap throws for elderly, beanies for the homeless and even crocheted baby blankets for the Big Bear Hospital Nursery. She was known as the blanket lady of Big Bear.
One of the nurses asked, "Who is going to keep Big Bear warm when you're gone Melba"!? Everyone she met or liked, their whole households got Afghans in their favorite colors.
Mom had a sense of humor, one coming to mind. She used to tell us to just "bury her in a box in the backyard and she'd be fine". She didn't want anyone spending time or money on her. She didn't want fluff.
So, we apologize for the small organic funeral...but just the same we are here to honor her life, her love and passing onto heaven "our final home with Jesus"...
Rest in peace mom, Grama mountains, Grama Melba. We Love you and will miss you...!
Please don't send flowers to her house.
