Melida "Tita" Cabezas

Melida "Tita" Cabezas Cerón, aged 91, of Rahway, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home on November 3rd, 2024.
Melida was born on June 29th, 1933, in Anserma, Colombia, to Jose Manuel Cerón Vivas and Aura Cerón Rojas. She was the 3rd born of seven siblings: Jaime, Esperanza, (Melida), Mario, Edgar, Yolanda, and Harold Cerón Rojas.
She moved to the United States in the early 1960s where she stayed with her mother´s cousin, Melida Johnson, in Queens, New York. She started working in New York City in banks and factories, and soon after, met her future husband and father to her two children, Aldemar Cabezas.
They were extremely active in the Colombian community of Queens and then later, in the 1980s and 1990s, in the Colombian community of Elizabeth, NJ.
In 1971 and 1974, Melida gave birth to her sons Harold and Walter Cabezas, respectively.
The next 53 years Melida was completely dedicated to her family as she worked for many years at Spencer Savings Bank in Elizabeth, NJ, and in the family business, Los Faroles Restaurant, also in Elizabeth, NJ.
Melida had a fondness for crochet and was extremely creative. She enjoyed making beautiful scarves, shawls, hats, mittens, blankets, baby clothes, etc., but she may have enjoyed giving away her work to others even more. For many years she was extremely active in the Rahway Senior Center with other Seniors as they practiced their collective love of crochet; many of her works were donated to local hospitals and to people in need.
Melida was an extremely proud Colombian American/Latino who was always positive and very friendly to anyone she met.
Melida Cabezas Cerón is survived by her sister, Yolanda D´Avino; by her son Walter and his wife, Angiee Cabezas, as well as their children, Isaac, Mateo and Ethan; by her son Harold, his ex-wife Aracely Cabezas, and their daughter, Alana Cabezas.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at The Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home located at 275 West Milton Ave. in Rahway, NJ 07065. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
