Melvin Brandt Obituary

Melvin Brandt, 73, 2507 N. Sixth St., died of cancer, Jan. 3, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Melvin Jacob Brandt was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Albion, Neb., to Carl and Anna Brandt. He was raised on the farm near Albion and graduated as valedictorian from Albion High School in 1943. He began working for the Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Albion on Jan. 1, 1948. Mel married Marian Rasmussen, Aug. 6, 1950, at Emmaus Lutheran church in Kennard, Neb. In 1958 he transferred to the state office in Lincoln, Neb. Then, in 1963 he moved to the state office here in Bismarck. At the time of his retirement in 1982, he held the position of assistant state administrative officer. He was the treasurer of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 29 years. Since his retirement, he has been involved in various volunteer work, including Summer of Safety, senior health insurance counseling, and was also a senior tax aid volunteer. He was active in N.A.R.F.E.

Mel is survived by his wife, Marian; his daughter, Teri; his son-in-law, Allen Koppy and their children, B.J., Katy and Emily, all of Bismarck; a daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Mary and Kevin Kubitz, and their children, Tom, Corey and Jimm, Vergas, Minn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Irvin and Shirley Brandt, Wayne, Neb.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Bob Hadan, San Juan, Texas; a brother-in-law and his wife, Maynard and Delores Rasmussen, Aurora, Colo.; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Myra and Doug Herbster, Payson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Tim.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Good Shepherd Lutheran church or Shiloh Christian School.
