Melvin Sims Obituary

It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin Dean Sims, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on January 27, 1949, to Pauline and William Sims, Melvin grew up in Gibson City, Illinois, and later made his home in Plymouth, Indiana, where he spent his final years embraced by the people he loved most.

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Christine Sims; his children, Maria Sims and Melvin Aaron Sims; and his treasured grandchildren—Levi, Zadie, Morgan, and Connor—who were the light of his life.

A man of integrity, service, and joy, Melvin lived a life filled with purpose. He proudly served as a sheriff, worked skillfully as a diesel mechanic, and shared his passion for martial arts as a dedicated Isshinryu karate instructor. His students, colleagues, and friends admired not only his talent and discipline but the kindness and humor he brought into every room.

Affectionately known by many as “Mother Mel,” he earned this nickname because of his extraordinary capacity to care for others. Melvin had a nurturing soul—always checking on people, always making sure everyone was fed, supported, and loved. His heart had no limits. To be in his presence was to feel safe, valued, and uplifted.

A joyful spirit and a committed Christian, Melvin lived out his faith daily through compassion, empathy, and acts of service. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer a listening ear, or bring a smile to someone who needed it. All who met him were touched by his generosity and gentle spirit.

Melvin’s legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness will live forever in the hearts of those he touched.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 am at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1314 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563. Services will immediately follow with Pastor Eric Ahlemeyer officiating.

Burial will take place at New Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
