Melvyn R. Cooper, Sr. 85 of Albany, died Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
His graveside service will be 10:00 am, Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Crown Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Mathews Funeral Home.
Born and raised in Albany, Mr. Cooper graduated in 1958 from Albany High School. After graduation, he served in the United States Army. Upon returning home, he opened Cooper Company in 1979 and operated it until his death.
He began Hydroplane boat racing all over the country at a very young age. In addition to winning multiple US National Championships in the sport, he was also a three-time World Champion. Mr. Cooper never met a stranger and loved being a "Duncan" to all his grandchildren.
His parents Willie and Minnie Mae Cooper and sister Oleta Hancock preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara Morris Cooper, daughters, Kim Cooper Brooks (Ken “Skeeter”), Kelli Cooper Roberts (Mike), son Melvyn “Mel” Cooper, Jr. (Amanda), grandchildren, Kensley Brooks, Cooper Roberts, Cason Roberts, Mackenzie Cooper, Milli Cooper, Mia Cooper and a host of nieces and nephews.
