Today, we come together to honor the life of Mervyn Edwards, a remarkable soul known affectionately as “Dumbie”, “Super”, or “Trini Man” to those closest to him. Born on April 27, 1960, in the small village of Parrylands, Guapo, Mervyn's journey was one of wit, generosity, ambition, and unwavering loyalty, spanning from the sunny shores of Trinidad and Tobago to the bustling streets of Brooklyn, NY, Boston, MA, and finally settling in Camden, New Jersey.
While Mervyn dedicated himself to his role as a maintenance worker for the Camden City Parking Authority and previously a fabricator, he was so much more than his profession. As a masterful cook, zealous basketball fan, keen western movie enthusiast, and skillful tailor, Mervyn's talents, passions, and love of music knew no bounds. His meticulous nature and sense of style were legendary among his loved ones, earning him the title of one of the 'neatest' individuals around.
Deeply rooted in his faith, Mervyn's commitment to his Christian beliefs guided every aspect of his life. His relationship with God was the cornerstone upon which he built his values, relationships, and sense of self. His unwavering trust in the divine direction, as spoken of in the Book of Psalms, was a guiding light throughout his journey. Additionally, Mervyn found support and upbringing from his aunts and uncles Glenda, Angela, Elsa, Hilma, Cuthbert, Eltina, Bernice, Wayne, and Samuel, who played integral roles in shaping his character.
Mervyn's legacy is one of profound love and familial devotion. Preceded in death by his parents Eastlyn and Evans, he is survived by his stepmother Mavis, siblings Curtis, Roger, Brent, and Estrella, as well as his children Makesi, Malika, and Shivon, and grandchildren Camya, Caydon, Jahkeem, and Anaiah. Additionally, he leaves behind step-children Kendon, Aaron, Alicia, Natalie, Nayla, Nianni, and Brandon, along with beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins Jasmaine, Giselle, Jessel, Anasa, Stefan, Lisa, Kevin, Maureen, Arden and many others. Mervyn’s previous spouses were Marlene, Arlene, and Brigette, who has passed away. Some of his cherished friendships include Eric J., Sean, Gregory "Toden", Carl, Eric "Jonesy", "Junior", "Whitey", Bret, and his significant other, Charmaine. Beyond this, his influence has touched the lives of many others, including more family, friends, and colleagues.
His life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of love, faith, ambition, and a unique sense of humor that touched all who knew him. Today, as we bid farewell, we celebrate Mervyn as not just a brother, father, grandfather, and friend but as a cherished gift to us all.
