Harpswell- Merwin Linden Chipman of Harpswell, Maine, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine, in the presence of his wife and three sons. He was born at home on the Allen Point Road in Harpswell on June 16, 1933.

Merwin attended Brunswick High School and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, serving aboard the USS Purdy during the Korean War. While home on leave, he was introduced to JoAnne Armstrong through his friend Phillip Bibber. Merwin and JoAnne were married on April 13, 1957.

In 1960, Merwin began his career at Bowdoin College, serving as Physical Plant Foreman. He took great pride in maintaining the college's sports fields and the ice at Dayton Arena. After more than thirty years of dedicated service, he retired in 1993.

A lifelong enthusiast of building, gardening, and caring for his home, Merwin was known for his meticulous attention to detail. His vehicles were always well maintained, his lawn and gardens impeccably kept, and his home and property on Allen Point Road were thoughtfully expanded and improved to accommodate his growing family.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, gardening, and operating his tractors. He took pleasure in listening to country and bluegrass music, dining out with JoAnne, and conversing with neighbors while tending his property.

Merwin is survived by his wife of 68 years, JoAnne Chipman; his sons, Jeffrey Chipman and his wife Valerie Chipman, Andrew Chipman, and Stephen Chipman; grandchildren, Larissa Smith, Marielle Chipman, Samuel Chipman, Margaret Chipman, Parker Chipman, Zachary Chipman, and Jason Landon Marcus; and great-grandchildren Gabrielle Michaud, Colby Chipman, William Chipman and Vinnie Chipman.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, at the Elijah Kellogg Church, 917 Harpswell Neck Road, Harpswell, Maine.

Merwin will be remembered for his dedication to family, his exemplary work ethic, and his kind and welcoming spirit.
