Mich Steenbekkers, age 80, passed away at his home in Darboy, USA on February 15, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Mich was born in Aarle-Rixtel, Noord Brabant, the Netherlands on September 3, 1945.
At age 17, he began his lifelong career in nursing, starting in psychiatric care. His work spanned many areas of care, from pediatric to geriatric and nearly everything in between.
Seeking new opportunities, he immigrated to Wisconsin in 1982, and became a United States citizen in 1993.
A lifelong learner, he deepened his love for history by participating in Civil War reenactments with the 1st Alabama Cavalry, Company M. He was also involved with the operation of the Little Chute windmill, serving as head miller for several years.
He enjoyed puzzles - especially Dutch cryptogrammen - and was skilled at needlepoint. He was an enthusiastic cook - his soup and kroketten were very popular. He also enjoyed traveling, often visiting family and friends overseas, as well as taking random day trips within the state or weekend trips to Michigan.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Hanneke; his children, Annemie and Jorrit (Jessi); and his grandchildren, Calli (Mitchell), Phillip, Willem, Reilly, and Elliot.
He will be fondly remembered by many as a "one of the good ones", or in Dutch: "een fenomenaal mens".
A funeral service has been scheduled for Friday February 20, 2026, at 11:00am at Wichmann Funeral Home-Tri County Chapel, 1592 Oneida St, Menasha. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 10:00am until the service begins.
