Michael Adair Obituary

Michael Hopkinson Adair
Michael Hopkinson Adair of Stonington, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025. He was 86 years old. Michael was born on April 12, 1938, to Frank E. Adair and Marion Hopkinson in New York City. Family was everything to "Dadoo". Beloved by his five children, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and cherished wife Ann Manson Adair, he will be missed deeply. His warmth, smile, and light shone bright. His absence leaves a void in our family that words cannot adequately express.
Michael graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy with high honors, Class of 1955. From there, he attended Harvard College, Class of 1959, where he was the acclaimed stroke for the varsity crew team until he switched sports and played defense on Harvard's varsity lacrosse team. Michael then went on to Columbia University, where he received master's degrees in business and education. Michael was a direct descendant of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Following his family's patriotic tradition, Michael proudly served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the First Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California, and was a decorated expert sharpshooter on the pistol team.
Throughout his professional life Michael made legendary contributions to the advertising and marketing industry. He then joined the faculty at Greenwich Academy (CT), where he was a beloved teacher of history and economics, positively influencing countless lives. In 1983, Michael married the love of his life, Ann Manson. They enjoyed 42 beautiful years together, first residing in Bedford, NY, before moving to Stonington, CT, in 2004. Dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his new community, Michael served as the esteemed President of Historic Stonington and held a pivotal role as a Burgess of Stonington Borough.
Michael's family will forever cherish the memory of a man who personified love and kindness. He was sheer joy and so much fun. His unwavering support as a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and husband will be treasured forever. He was an epic storyteller whose original tales are legendary. His remarkable character and indelible presence will inspire us always.
Words cannot capture the fullness of Michael's remarkable life, but they do offer a glimpse into a life well-lived. He lived his life brimming with joy, love, and purpose - a legacy his family is determined to continue.
A memorial service for Michael will be held on Saturday, April 12 at 11:00 am at Calvary Episcopal Church, 27 Church St, Stonington, Connecticut.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Michael's memory to Historic Stonington (PO Box 103, Stonington, CT, 06378) or Calvary Episcopal Church (27 Church Street, Stonington, CT, 06378).

I will never forget what a wonderful storyteller he was. As we all sat at dinner at the Hillsboro club he kept us enraptured by his tales! And then with his wife Ann by his side and Virginia trailing after, he would jump up to run and check on March Madness! I have such wonderful memories. Ann, Virginia, Karen and Family I am so sorry for your monumental loss. Love and hugs Liz

Much sadness comes from hearing of Michael´s passing.
He was a person you loved to see arrive, hated to see go, and who made your day better by the time spent with him in between. One of the great ones.
Vaya con Dios, my friend. And Semper Fi.

Mr. Adair was as beloved by his students at GA as by his colleagues. He was a star and I am fortunate to have known him. RIP Michael.
