Michael Adkins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Macken Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Feb. 12, 2026.
Michael "Mike" Hale Adkins, 65, of Rochester, died surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, at Saint Marys Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born on September 19, 1960, to Elizabeth "Betty" (Whalen) and Wallace "Wally" Adkins, the third of six children. Born in North Minneapolis, his family relocated to St. Michael, MN when he was in grade school. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business Administration. During college, he worked for his aunt who served on the Minneapolis City Council. After graduation, he was employed as a Trust Assistant at Richfield Bank where he met his future spouse Maureen "Reenie" Garvey.

They spent their early marriage in Los Angeles, where he worked at CCH Computax as a Tax Analyst. After moving home to the Midwest, they started their family in Minneapolis before relocating to Rochester, MN with their young children. He earned his MBA from St. Thomas University while working full time and raising their three children.

He was a constant presence in his children's upbringing including coaching sports, attending band performances, and leading scouting events. He demonstrated the importance of civic engagement in one's community by volunteering his time at St. Pius X, Rotary Club, United Way, American Red Cross, A Litter Bit Better, STRIVE mentorship, Family Promise Rochester, being treasurer of every organization he was involved with, and many hours donating blood.

He spent the majority of his career at US Bank where he established himself managing investment portfolios, work he continued at Bremer and Associated Banks. He was happy to impart his financial wisdom to anyone who asked.

His favorite pastime was playing baseball, ultimately joining the Rochester Roosters 1860s vintage baseball team. He also followed Gopher sports and anything his kids were involved in. Other hobbies included golf, beekeeping, and working in the yard.

He is survived by his wife Maureen, their three children, Anthony (Jennifer) Adkins of Dallas, Kelly (Alec) Vicenzi of St. Paul, and Shannon Adkins of Hopkins, MN; 4 grandchildren, Lola and Joaquín Gonzalez-Adkins, and Charles and Harrison Vicenzi; his brother Patrick (Joy) Adkins; sisters Kathy (Rod) Merry, Caroline (Tom) Bjellos, and Nancy (Chris) Boeckers; brothers-in-law Mike (Kathy) Garvey and Tim Garvey; sister-in-law Patrice (Tom) Emond; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Betty and Wally, sister Susan Niess, nephew Ryan Niess, and parents-in-law Jim and Mickey Garvey.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2026, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St SE, Rochester, MN 55904, followed by a Celebration of Life with food and drinks.
