Michael Joe Ashford, born on May 29, 1956, in Houston, Texas, journeyed through life with a spirit of dedication and joy until his passing on March 5, 2026, in Buffalo, Texas. He departed this world peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family who cherished his every moment.
Michael devoted a significant part of his life to his career as a truck driver for Gulf State Toyota, a vocation that enabled him to traverse the vast expanses of the United States. Despite the miles that often separated him from his loved ones, he carried the weight of his responsibilities with pride, knowing that he was the unwavering provider for his family. His love was made evident in his unyielding commitment to ensuring that they were well taken care of.
Michael was known for his infectious humor and a delightful sense of wit. He possessed an extraordinary ability to light up a room, as those who encountered him quickly found themselves drawn into his engaging presence. A hallmark of his personality was his playful banter; if he teasingly poked fun at you, it was merely a sign that you had earned a special place in his heart. A true conversationalist, he never met a stranger, often making friends wherever he went.
Michael's passions extended beyond his professional life. He found joy in cooking, skillfully preparing bar-b-que and breakfast for his beloved family, reveling in the opportunity to bring them together over a comforting meal. His adventurous spirit also led him to ride his Harley motorcycle in his younger days, and he found exhilaration in NASCAR and dirt track racing, pursuits that brought excitement and camaraderie into his life.
He proudly served his country for two years in the US Army. This noble experience added another layer of respect to the multifaceted man he became.
Michael shared his life with a loving family who will carry forth his legacy. He is survived by his children, Marsha (Donald) Pleasant of Pollok, Texas; Mona Ashford of Lufkin, Texas; Angela Miller (Martin Taylor) of Bellville, Texas; Tammy (Robert) Patterson of Magnolia, Texas; and Michael Ashford of Buffalo, Texas. His grandchildren, Sheldon, Dalton, Jacob, Jordan, Lacie, Morgan, Jaden, and Ethan, along with eight great-grandchildren, provided him boundless joy. He also leaves behind his brother, Lonnie Ashford of New Waverly, Texas, and sisters, Cheryl McDaniel of New Waverly, Texas; Lois Hatten of Dayton, Texas; and Freida Blackwell of Casper, Wyoming, alongside numerous extended family and friends who will forever cherish the memories created with him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie Clarence and Edith Virginia (Barrick) Ashford; his beloved wife, Becky Ashford; grandchildren, Justin, Garrett, and Emily; and siblings, Clarence, Emmitt, Larry, and Carolyn. Their absence is keenly felt, yet their spirits live on in the stories and laughter shared throughout the years.
A time of visitation will take place Monday, March 9, 2026, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Walters' Buffalo Funeral Home, Buffalo, Texas. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Lloyd Lane, will be held the following day beginning at 11 A.M., also at the funeral home. Michael will be laid to rest next to his beloved, Becky, in Buffalo Cemetery, Buffalo, Texas.
