Funeral service for Michael Barrett, age 80, of Como, Texas will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs, Texas with Bro. Terry Bolton officiating. Interment will follow at Greenpond Cemetery with military honors by Hopkins County Military Coalition. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mr. Barrett passed away at Parkland Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2025.
James Michael Barrett was born on November 29, 1944 in Sulphur Springs, Texas to Sherblon and Willie Rachel (Hicks) Barrett. He married Elizabeth JoAnne Caldwell in Greenpond, Texas on April 28, 2001. Michael proudly served his country in the 23rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army from 1967-1969. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree of Science on May 15, 1976 from East Texas State University in Commerce, majoring in Industry & Technology and receiving a minor in Business Administration. Michael was the foreman over the railyard at Lone Star Steel in Dangerfield, Texas for almost 20 years, then worked as a security officer at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in Palestine and Winnsboro, Texas. He was a member of the Hopkins County Military Coalition and a member of the Greenpond Baptist Church.
Michael is survived by his wife, Elizabeth JoAnne Barrett; son, Jimmy Barrett (Stacey); daughter, Kim Petty (Clinton); stepdaughter, Tracy Rodriguez (Joe); stepson, Kenneth Caldwell (Jamie); stepson, Jonathan Caldwell (Kelsey); grandchildren, Breck Barrett (Shay), Brooke Barrett, and Bryce Barrett; step grandchildren, Austin Rodriguez, Ashley McQueen, Sarah Caldwell, Lydia Caldwell, Samuel Caldwell, Isaiah Caldwell, Jeremiah Caldwell, Claire Caldwell, Luke Caldwell, and Jude Caldwell; step great-grandchildren, Charlotte Walker and Grace Walker.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Sherblon and Rachel Barrett.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Greenpond Cemetery Association at 2283 FM 1567 East, Como, TX 75431.
