Michael Douglas Carpenter, loving husband, father and grandfather, age 58, of Culpeper passed away peacefully at his residence after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, September 25, 2008.

Mike was born December 29, 1949 in Charlottesville, Va. to Mae Helen Mitchell Carpenter and the late Rufus F. Carpenter.

Mike loved to hunt and fish with his two boys and most of all with his grandson Mikey who he loved dearly. Mike was a member of Slate Mills Baptist Church. He was a past member of Culpeper Alumni Football Association and was also a lifetime member of the Culpeper Fire Department Co. 1, where in the early 70's served as Captain. Over the years, he co-chaired the carnival and for many years cooked for the food stand.

In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda A. Carpenter; two children and their families, Stacy G. Carpenter and his wife, Sandi, of Culpeper and their sons, Mikey Carpenter and Dillon Smith, William F. Pierce, III and his wife, Deborah of Unionville and their children, Beth Blackburn and Raymond Pierce and his wife, Mauri and their three boys, RJ, Tommy and Willie.

Mike is also survived by an uncle, Edwin T. Carpenter and his wife, Ethel; two brothers, Ronald W. Carpenter and his wife, Wanda, and Roger L. Carpenter and his wife, Sandy; one sister, Debra Feagans and her husband, Johnny and several nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA 22701.

A funeral service to celebrate Mike's life will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sandy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow in Etlan Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chad McKnight, Larry Graham, Craig Frazier, Mahlon McAlister, Tommy Clark, Jack Griffin, Steve Corbin, Jesse Powell, Tommy Ross, Tommy Brown, Willie Glasscock, Tony Troilo, Wayne Grimsley, and Terry Graham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department, 151 W. Davis St., Culpeper, VA 22701; Slate Mills Baptist Church, P.O. Box 115, Boston, VA 22713 and/or Hospice of the Rapidan, P.O. Box 1715, Culpeper, VA 22701.
